(Lucius Eugene), 1824-1900 The "unknown heroine" is Mrs. Van Metre of Clarke co., Va., who befriended Lieutenant Henry E. Bedell, 1st Vermont heavy artillery, wounded at the battle of o Opequan, Sept. 13, 1864, and deserted by his comrades.
