Looking for Positive and Uplifting Songs for Children to Sing |
Greetings once again from Thailand. I am a first grade teacher with two Taylor acoustic guitars and 22 children who love to sing and rock out daily. Music and singing are a huge part of our day with such songs as: Three Little Birds and One Love by Bob Marley, Quinn the Eskimo by Dylan is our favorite to sing, Joy to the World by 3 Dog night, I Believe I Can Fly and some fun songs in Sanskrit too.
We have our Winter Concert coming up in Dec. and I would like to dive deeper into some awesome new songs, but I can’t seem to come up with any right now. The name/theme of the Winter Concert is: “Love Moves The World.”
I’m open to suggestions for songs I can teach and sing with my students in front of 100’s of people in December or just in the class daily.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Looking for Positive and Uplifting Songs for Children to Sing |
ripple would be great, but probably too many lyrics for such young kids.
tomorrow people - Ziggy Marley
peace train - cat stevens
will try to think of more - those just off the top of my head. probably not too useful though - sorry

Re: Looking for Positive and Uplifting Songs for Children to Sing |
Thanks, that was a good start, but I need songs with short and sweet lines, like "Don't worry about a thing..." The Mighty Quinn rocks when they all come in for the chorus - I sing the verses.
Keep em comin'

Re: Looking for Positive and Uplifting Songs for Children to Sing |
At least once, every kid should get to sing a song that rhymes lobster with mobster :-D. "A Horse Named Bill" is one of my favorites off that disc and I just loved hearing my son try to sing it - cataleptics! In general, I'm not sure the lyrics on that disc could be categorized as "positive" or "uplifting", but they sure are *fun*!

Check out any number of tunes by Dan Zane...my three year old ranks Dan right up there with Jerry and Johnny Cash.

Marvelous Little Toy from Peter, Paul and Mary's children's album: Peter, Paul and Mommy.
It is a really fun classic and probably a crowd pleaser the way you are presenting it with kids coming in on the chorus... I think it might work well for you.
"It went ZIP when it moved and
POP when it stopped, and
WHIRRRR when it stood still,
I'll never know just what it was
and I guess I never will."
I cry when I hear it, and laugh too.

Re: Looking for Positive and Uplifting Songs for Children to Sing |
Hi - I think that ZIP, POP, WHIRR song was why they made the movie A Mighty Wind!
I like the Buckwheat Zydeco album Choo-Choo Boogaloo. You'd have to learn the songs, but they are fairly simple.
My daughter got 2 copies. I'd be happy to donate one to your cause. Send your address in Thailand and I'll ship it off to you. I'm andy@gemut.com.

talking heads/david byrne can be fun.
paul simon's later albums are good for verse/chorus workout.
all these get good rotation at house/car.

Re: Looking for Positive and Uplifting Songs for Children to Sing |
Hey, you've heard the Langley School's Music Project album, right? With all those Canadian kids doing songs by Bowie, Wings, Beach Boys, etc? If not, you should check it out, maybe get some ideas.
Also, how about "Aiko Aiko?" You guys can make up the words like everybody else. Just find words you can force to rhyme with "bayou"
Or how about some Roger Miller? Something like "You can't rollerskate in a buffalo herd" would be easy and cool.
"Roxanne," you probably don't want to do "Roxanne" . . . .

My kids love a song by Toad The Wet Sprocket. "Little Man,Big Man". It's on the cd "Coil". They learned everyword after about 3 or 4 listens. Good luck with the upcoming event. Maybe if it's taped (aud or video) you can upload it to The Archive in the open source or other respective location.

How 'bout "How Sweet it is to be Loved by You"?
"Banana Pancakes" (Jack Johnson)--and, oh yeah, "War Pigs" (Black Sabbath) :-)

DAN ZANES, DAN ZANES, DAN ZANES. He is currently THE best songwriter for kids. The true test is, can the parents actually bear to listen. Dan Zanes and Buckwheat's Choo-Choo Boogaloo fit the bill.
Go get'em....

Yes, I will post the audio from the concert and other jams leading up to it.

Time to bone up on your ol' Woody Guthrie... "Wanna go ridin' in my Car-Car?" - methinks you could use some Depression Era protest down there in the South.
"This Land is your Land."

Carter Family: "Keep on the Sunny Side," "Little Darling Pal of Mine"...lots of Carter Family stuff would be suitable (might want to stay away from the murder ballads though...) :)
