Forum: movies Subject: Re: Format questions for release of Stock Footage

Hi,

Those aren't silly questions at all! People choose either Cinepack or Divx for avi movies, depending on how they're encoded. (there are a bazillion other ways to encode AVIs, but these are the most popular - if you're not using one of these two, just choose one anyway, that way our deriver still knows its an AVI.)

You can upload the mpeg2 and the avi at the same time in the same place. We have a piece of software that creates the smaller formats automatically. When it sees the avi, it will just say "hey, i can't do anything with this," and when it sees the mpeg2 it will say, "yay! i can derive this!" and go to work.

So when you first create an item, upload the file(s) and check it in, we run the derive automatically. You don't have to do anything to make that happen.

The only time you need to use the derive button is if you add more stuff *later* that you'd like us to derive. If you've already created an item and you decide to add another file, you check it out, add the file, check it in, and then click the derive button. If you're adding an AVI file, you don't need to do that because we don't derive from those, but it wouldn't hurt/break anything if you did. It usually takes about 20 minutes for a new file to show up, which it will do automatically.

Hope that helps, and let me know if you have any other questions!

Alexis
