People have reported success editing with the high quality mpeg2 versions by transcoding them to DV using ffmpegX or streamclip.

never thought i'd be saying this, but - in this one case - Premiere Pro 2.0 is actually kicking FCP a**.

i'm about to finish up a feature using the archive footage. when i upgraded to Premiere 2.0, I was able to import the mpeg2s directly into Premiere and edit them from the timeline. Things were a little choppy if i didn't preview render them, but for the most part I've been really happy.

I tried to do the same thing in FCP, but it made you render the movies before you could even look at them.

Just thought this might help someone out.
