Has anyone looked at the Lexmark T420d? It prints at 22ppm, duplexes, has a 50,000 page duty cycle, and is selling for 749.00 at PC Connection with an extra 32 meg of ram?

It is monochrome, but I am thinking that for this project, monochrome may be the most appropriate method except perhaps for the cover.

We find "booklet mode" very helpful in making books. Lexmart's laser printers dont seem to support this. (they have an inkjet line, but that is too slow).

the other good feature is ethernet.

Panasonic makes a great $430 duplexing ethernet laser, but it does not have booklet mode so we sent it back.

What kind of cover stock are you using? I'm curious because I tried making books at home using craft glue which works surprisingly well. But unless using expensive, thick photo paper for inkjets I don't get good quality covers. What paper exactly are you using for the covers? Do you have lettering on the spine?

We use 80lb cover stock (this is different from 80lb paper, confusingly). we use a powis parker binder that does perfect binding.

the cover stock goes through the external paper path (not the internal tray because it is heavier than can go around the corners in the printer).
