It's a good thing people weren't upset by the idea of animal testing in those days. Think of all the monkeys, rabbits, guinea pigs and mice that were used to develop the first polio vaccine. With avian flu in the news, it looks like we're on the edge of another epidemic. I wonder if American drug companies and the NIH are up for the job this time around.
