Song of the South question |
hello,
I had posted a couple days ago but in the Moving images forum. Since I only got one short reply, and I realized it is better asking in here too, here is my question.
Was "Song of the South" ever properly renewed by Disney?
I suspect not.
I tried to do some research using data from the Renewals listed here in Archive.org.
I checked 1971, 1972 and 1973 since being it a 1946 movie it was supposed to be renewed in 1972 (Disney rereleased it in that year).
According to
http://chart.copyrightdata.com/ch07.html"For works copyrighted 1923-1950, for copyright renewal to be valid, renewal had to occur between the 27th and 28th anniversaries of the date that the initial copyright term began."
This is the renewal I've found:
R564892.

Productions (PWH); 3Dec73; R564892.
It seems well out of that time frame.
Any ideas on this?

They all ran away to hide! You have to understand that the NAACP wishes that this film and a bunch of others, never existed and they have spent a great deal of time trying to erase the fact that they do exist. Also you're fighting the forum members who simply don't want to get involved lest they come across as racists. I happen to love "Song Of The South" as a thoroughly uplifting and happy movie. The country was different when it was made and to try to rewrite history is a sad commentary of the people in America. They have become members of the collective. They fear not belonging because their thoughts are different. Different=bad. Bad=banishment. So, I'm going to go listen to Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and smile no matter what. Good Luck on your quest.

The Shadow knows...
SotS is much like the "censored 11" Looney Tunes, which are now considered so racist (which they are) that they're no longer commercially available (which is sad). Or the 1943 serial "Batmsn;" it abounds with anti-Japanese remarks ("Since a wise government rounded up the shifty-eyed Japs...", "your twisted Oriental brain," "That's the kind of answer that fits the color of your skin," an so on). A censored home-video version was available in the '80s. But the owners wised up, and the current DVD edition is complete.
Consider them as historical documents, reflecting the cultural attitudes of their times. One could turn them into teaching tools, rather than pretending those attitudes never existed. Dirt you sweep under the rug never really goes away.

well I think its status should be clarified.
Also: it has a post-civil war setting.

I agree, not for the political implications but it was the first feature film of Disney using live action/animation. He played with it in the early 20's with the Alice series (some of which I think are here in IA) but he discarded it.

The renewal date shown (3Dec73) is shortly after the beginning of the 27th,(12Nov46 + 27 years = 12Nov73) year of the original copyright. This looks legit to me.
By the way...Disney is notorious for keeping up on copyrights, renewals trademarks etc.
I don't know for sure, but I would be very hesitant betting on any Disney stuff getting into PD.
