First, familiarize yourself with copyright terms. There's an excellent guide at the Copyright Information Center at Cornell University.

http://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm

Once you've done this, you can check for registration. There are two places to do this: The US Copyright Office (http://www.copyright.gov/records/) and here in the Archive. There are US copyright renewal lists for every year from 1950 to 1978 in the open source texts collection.

That's the hard way. The easy way is to post a question in the Feature Films forum. There are people there who are helpful and knowledgable and can quickly tell you if the work in question is actually PD.

Need to be educated a bit here. Is the following still under copyright?

Type of Work: Motion Picture
Registration Number / Date: RE0000602879 / 1993-01-04
Renewal registration for: LP0000032285 / 1965-12-01
Title: Crossing at White Feather. By Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc.
Series: Rawhide
Copyright Claimant: CBS, Inc. (PWH)

Variant title: Crossing at White Feather.
Names: Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc.
CBS, Inc.

No copyrights have expired on U.S. films released in 1964 or later.

You're absolutely and amazingly wrong.

You wrote:

The year 1965 wasn't in the 1950's.

And Rawhide ran from 1959 to 1965.

Renewal on U.S. films released in 1964 or later is automatic, so this would still be under copyright even if no renewal was filed.

So this statement is false:

Renewed in 1993 which keeps it out of PD.

And being a television show makes no difference.

And I answered my own question. Renewed in 1993 which keeps it out of PD.
