First Peggy-O recording |
I used to have a recording of Jerry introducing Peggy-O to the rest of the band in what sounded like a very casual situation. I think I got it on Archive. He was describing the song and it's history and then played it.
Is anyone familiar with this and, if so, is it on Archive?
Thanks so much...this was really a special recording.

No one, and I mean NO one should have to have that explained to them! It's our national anthem, eh?
Passed on from mother to son, from da to lad, thru the ages...

And son to mother. That's our Easter Egg Dyeing song. A few years ago, while dyeing Easter eggs, my kid was in charge of the music and it became an Irish Music Fest, with frequent repeats of Jerry doing Whiskey in the Jar. We ended up with a whole lot of green eggs.

OK, Ian and I will let you in our little club, but ya have to know where the trout in the Wicklow are, eh? Or at least been to visit them as we have? Thought about it?

Uh, my nephew went there. And he's a great fisherman. (Fisherkid.) And my son the Irish-o-phile was really jealous and wished he could go too. Does that count?

Sure; everyone's Irish if they want to be (we always allow it, since, like as with most minority join ups, they rarely mean it...har, har).
But, I forget--is there something to your knowledge and the family's interest beyond this factoid that I've forgotten? Mc and I go way back, and my "real" name would be more indicative of my roots, but can't recall if we've chatted before about it all...

Re: First Peggy-O recording |
Yeah, Irish on my dad's side. Irish Appalachian. So that's pre-potato famine (actually pre-Revolutionary War), but still, whiskey in a jar is about right. Great-grandpappy ran a still. (Really.)
Not Catholic, though (which could be a problem, eh?), but the same brilliant Irish tendency to manage to be poor under any circumstances. (Hey lads! It's the 1700s and the country is full of open, fertile land that could make us rich for generations! No, THAT'S not comfortable. Let's keep on moving west until we find the most hardscrabble place we can possibly find to put up a still ...)

Oh man...you are so right. It's been a while and I was just sitting remembering this. Thanks so much.
Now..is this available on the Archive anywhere?
You guys are soooo smart you can figure out what I'm thinking even when I don't know what I'm thinking. The world is a better place because of all of the Dead Heads.

Re: First Peggy-O recording |
Thanks for this...very nice.
This is from a soundcheck, what I used to have was a recording of what I think was Jerry introducing the song to the rest of the band. Just Jerry and and acoustic guitar playing and singing with him telling the history of the song.
I appreciate your response and will add this one to my own archive. Thanks again.

Re: First Peggy-O recording |
I think that is just a soundcheck practice, they had played the song for the first time in a concert two days earlier. (Download Series Vol. 8).
I could not find a recording available that is earlier than 12-10-73 (deadlists) but now i am curious based on the description.
