You are correct, ringolevio. It's the War and Peace of Stalingrad; Grossman was a correspondent during the war.

You mean how long has my husband been obsessed with the battle of Stalingrad? Forever, far longer than I've known him. I don't even know. Of course, if you recall because of his own father, he's obsessed with anything to do with WWII.

Well, it was a very important battle, and as discussed here at the Forum so many yrs ago, along with the Battle of Britain, a real turning pt (just as Midway was); the beg of end on the E Front.
That said, most US/Brit/French historians overlook the significance of it, and many here in the states still spout the party line that WWII was won with US $ and USSR bodies; there is something to that, but my view has alway been that as a result of Stalingrad, decided prior to any real impact of US resources, the war in Europe was over...all downhill thereafter.
Anyhoo, v cool that he's in the know...
