another list of some impact |
I was in my office and the tunes were just wailing away on the i-pod and it struck me like the perverbial smack on side of the head.A song comes on, The Byrds doing Hickory Wind and how instantly recogniseable Rodger McQuinn is.So this is a little list and I know there will be many others and do join in
Jimi Hendrix,Jerry Garcia,Alvin Lee,Bo Didley,Chuck Berry, Pete Townsend,Jorma,Dickey Betts, and Robin Trower (when he was a Les Paul player)
Noteble Mentions-Dave Mason,Steve Winwood,Mark Knofler,Peter Framton,Robbie Robertson,Mike Bloomfield.
Could Clapton make the list of course but I figured he learned evrything from Buddy Guy and B.B and Robert Johnson that the blues would be it's own list. Originality counts here.

Re: another list of some impact |
There are really 2 aspects of a guitarist's playing that make them stand apart from others; style and tone. For me, Kimock is one of the easiest to pick out. His style and tone are so distinct to me. I can also pick out Neil Young's electric guitar in a second. His tone is so instantly recognizable. Even more so with EVH. Brian May's tone is unlike any other as well. SRV's tone and style also really stand out.
Any guitarist whose work I'm familiar with is easy for me to recognize after hearing a few seconds of a recording, but Kimock, Neil Young, EVH and SRV are the most recognizable to me (other than Jerry).
Knopfler, Duane, Betts, Hendrix, Trucks, and Trey are good picks as well. They are all truly unique.

For both talent and tone, I'm really surprised no one has mentioned Carlos Santana
His talent is obvious and his tone is instantly recognizable.

I think I did on a repost along w/ David Gilmor.even though you might think that there are hundreds of worthy players out there for me it's the ones that stand alone w/ yes, their tone, style, fluidity. For that reason Jimmy Page gets a big no from me.SRV was a toss up clearly influenced by Jimi but to see him in a small place was amazing.

Pat Metheny
Wes Montgomery
Doc Watson
Wayne Henderson
Merle Travis - gotta be a shoo in when you have a picking style named after you.
Too bad no one will comment since I am, as always, late to the party......
