Re: Best '80s China>Rider? |
Interesting,
10-10-82 is my new favorite 80s china rider as well.
Though I still think DP 32 (8-7-82) has a better version.
and sticking with my predictability... 1989-07-17 has a seriously killer version which ends like a first set would, but the second set has only begun

Wow, I'm kicking myself in the ass for not having heard this one until now. Unfortunately DP 32 is one of the 3 I don't have (5 and 33 are the others). I've never bothered to check out the aud until now, but damn what a excellent performance.
And thanks to Purple Gel for recommending that IKYR from 1981-12-09. Haven't heard that one in a few years, and was just as blown away as last time. Probably my favorite Brent-era IKYR.

Re: Best '80s China>Rider? |
well dont miss out on all of the other gems from this damn fine show. The let it grow is easily one of the best i've ever heard and could very well be the one I'd pick if I could only have one, seriously killer stuff. The mamu > big river is great. The TMNS > sugaree > TMNS is interesting and pretty well done. On the road again, the wheel, playin and dont forget what is likely the best morning dew of 1982.

Re: Best '80s China>Rider? |
As to 8/7/82, the audience does a pretty damn good job of capturing the soul of this show. I'm fairly sure the source of my tape i nthe old days was the same as that transferred by Tony Suraci (definitely not the Ohr Weinberg FOB).
To my ears, the Board/Dick's Picks 32 adds clarity, but it's not a revelation. The CAVEAT EMPTOR statement for this release reads: "By now, after 11 years and 31 volumes of Dick's Picks, most of you ignore these dire audio warnings. Therefore, every once in awhile I need to remind you of the inherent problems of some of our music sources. The master for Alpine 8-7-82 is a cassette . . . yes, the lowly forgotten cassette. It is quite well preserved, but it is a sonically limited cassette none-the-less. In addition to that, because of overriding considerations at the time of the show, this mix is bass instrument shy. That being said, this is a great show, and that's the foremost DP consideration, right? So let the music and performance jump out and grab you, and enjoy! Love, J. N."
I was way excited when they released this show. When I received my copy I remember reading the phrase "bass instrument shy" and thinking WTF!!?? - you've got to be kidding!!??
"Spinning" DP 32 as I write this, the level for the bass at the beginning of China Cat is too high and, as a consequence, distorted - Healy appears to dial it down a short ways in. By the jam out of Playing, the bass is better defined, and its nuanced and sweet during Space as they roll into The Wheel. And then there's the Dew. . . .
When all is said and done, I think Mr. Norman's concluding remarks are spot on. A truly beautiful and special show. I've listened to the 2nd set 100+ times easily. Back in the day it changed my life.
A funny memory - my 11 year old brother was with me - before the show he said he wanted to hear On The Road Again - I said there was no way they would play it (big brother wrong again!) He called the gorgeous Peggy-O from the next night also.

3-9-81 sure is nice, but I agree 8-7-82 takes the cake...never thought a '80s China>Rider could compare to my beloved '73 and '74 versions, but damn if this one isn't amazing...

Re: Best '80s China>Rider? |
Yep - the China/Rider from 8/7/82 is easily my favorite post '74 version.
I was at this show, along with the next night. At the time 8/8/82 was the one that blew me away.
At some point in '86 I obtained a sweet very low-gen audience of most of the 2nd set of 8/7/82 (no Ship of Fools, no Drums, with a filler of Music>Sugaree>Music). I was completely amazed by the 2nd set material - a revelation as to a show I had actually "seen/heard." I dubbed the tape "Sacred Alpine" and for years it was much loved by myself and friends.
Jerry's picking flows beautifully during the China/Rider, and just when you think they're heading into Rider, Jerry and Brent drop into a "Feeling Groovy Jam" that goes straight to my heart, filled with Love, both present and lost. It has a soul all its own, unlike any of the early 70's versions. The Rider absolutely rips. Many, many times this sequence brought tears to my eyes.
The Wheel out of (a gorgeous) Space from this show is my favorite, bar none, (yes, a Sacred version), and the Morning Dew and the jam out of Playing are pretty damn good also.

Re: Best '80s China>Rider? |
NICE!
Great sound quality and super on-point playing. The transition jam from Scarlet to Fire is pretty sweet. Brent's got a great tone on the organ and he and Jerry have a nice section together right before Fire.
Never heard this before! Thanks for the heads up!

I concur in waves...others of note, 10-11-1983 is a great version and a long jammy version is 04-14-1982, definitely worth a listen...

Haha.
By the way, what I really meant is "best Brent-era China>Rider." I like to divide the eras up by keyboardist.

3/9/81 is fantastic. Thanks for all the other suggestions!
Mine were 3/3/81, 10/11/89 and the exceptionally killer 3/15/90.

The Irvine show is my favorite Looks Like Rain of all time. I was at the Greensboro show. Hell of a good time!
