I was fortunate to be the photographer for the university yearbook and newspaper. Since this was 40 years ago, I have trouble remembering the very first, but I do recall Laura Nyro, Chicago, Ike & Tina Turner, Iggy & The Stooges (very loud with Jane Fonda opening with a rant!), Sly & Family Stone and more in 71-72. Most memorable evening was sitting in the front row watching Leo Kottke in his prime perform his magic and telling sly, sardonic jokes in 1974.

ELO, the year they toured with the giant clamshell space ship thingy. My friends mom drove us and came along to make sure we didn't do anything fun. We were 14 or so. Lots of lights, fog and a bit of obvious lip-synching. Oakland Coliseum Arena 1977 or there abouts. I saw a lot of the standard fare rock shows at the Oakland Col Arena (Styx, Tull, Rush, Who, etc) but never did a day on the green thing at the outdoor venue. I remember my ears ringing violently after these types of concerts. But somehow no lasting damage...

I did catch a few shows at the Cow Palace, but it was a much longer drive from Livermore - LHS class of '79 - so we usually caught shows in Oakland.
Funny thing is, I didn't see my first Dead show at the Oakland Coliseum Arena until 1992. All Greek Theater, Frost, Warfield and Oakland Aud shows during my time in the Bay area.
My first basketball arena Dead show was 10/11/1983.

I believe Cream's truely 1st gig in N.Y.was at the Cafe Wa.
I was not there but a friend of mine was and said they had Marshalls up to the ceiling and it was so loud the place was shaking. Paint was fluttering down and flying all over. That's scary close.

First rock show was Foghat, Montrose and JoJo Gunne. It was 1975 at the Rockford, Ilinois Armory building. Great times. I think we paid $5.00 for tickets. Now you can't even get a beer at a show for 5 bucks.

I envy you guys, I'm fr this part of the world, north east India, Shillong, where nobody really tours. My 1st concert was dec 2004 when Firehouse visited India. Never had the chance to see the Grateful Dead although been their fan since early 80s. listen to them almost every day, non of their official vids even released in India. Its only on portals like this (three cheers for archive.org) that we can visualize all those wonderful moments you all had.

First "Real" show was Kansas in 76 in Chicago. Saw Led Zeppelin at the Chicago Stadium the same year. Saw the Dead in the illustrious May 77 timeframe.
First non-Rock show would have been Harry Chapin at 11 in 75.

1967: GD, GGPk. This is the one the parents made me sit in the car, but CREAM loving older brothers say that this is ONE where they played GRoad (I don't think I've been able to confirm this via any concert info available ANYWHERE...probably not to be trusted, but they did say it way back then since I had taken their copy of the GD # 1 album). Anyhow, parents dropped them--the brothers--and I heard vague noises...only counts in horseshoes I suppose?
1974: GD, Winterland, Oct run, two nights...ie, "real first" show...disappointed. Sorry, but pre'ferd 75 shows I saw. This always pisses off JOTS. We thought the sound was "off", and that guy in the overalls was 6'9" and blotted out my view of the stage.

The Magic Mountain Music Festival at Mt. Tam, June, 1967, a week before Monterey Pop. My friend and I arrived just in time to catch the Doors perform.
Jeebers, I can't believe I found this! I can remember sitting up the hill about halfway and then coming down and standing at the left edge of the stage for the rest of the show.

That's the one. You had to take "Trans-Love Buslines" to get up there. We waited 2 hours to get an available bus. What a ride! We came so close to the edge on that winding road up and down the mountain. No way could they get away with doing that today. Lawyers didn't exist in those days. (erk!)
Crikey! I think the only ones still working (or even alive!) are Steve Miller and Dionne Warwick! Everyone else is long gone.

My first was about Kiss at Capital Center Landover, MD around 1984 (no makeup).
Paul Stanley; (worst frontman, should never talk talk onstage), actually said to the crowd in his lispy voice: "Hello Landovah, and surrounding communities". We were like oh my God, he didn't just say "surrounding communities"?

Because of David Lee Roth's assless leather chaps?
Am I the only one that can't remember what their first concert was? My folks took me to some things as a kid as I have vague recollections of Joan Baez and Simon & Garfunkel, but can't place when, where, etc. First shows I really recall were 76 era (right around bicentennial) as I saw Nugent, Aerosmith, KISS, and... Eath, Wind and Fire all during theat time frame in Richmond, Va.

I'm with you on that. I have recollections of lots of early concerts and festivals with the folks but can't remember shit about them.
I Remember one of the first big concerts that I went to on my own and remember some details on was the Scorpions, Love at First Sting tour and some upstart called Bon Jovi at either Providence civic center or Worcester in the early 80's but that's about as good a my memory gets.

Ha--that brings back memories! Recall his great detective work on the classic myth: markers somehow alter the encoding/disk integrity (is there ANY of that around here? SDH? "integrity meter", please?).
Dire found out this was bunk, and then, he followed up by abusing each and every disk he mailed, with, as you note, his distinctive writing style (what else was the Phud for, eh?).
Do also note, however, that he was somehow "given" to you in the great Tell + Mcglone vs Flow + Dire hoops match of the century. Too bad that never actually happened (except for my ailing back I suppose).

Involuntary 1st~ Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton
Indiana State Fair
Very much voluntary 1st~ Adam Ant
Friend or Foe Tour 1982~ Rupp Arena University Of Kentucky
(The Ramons opened and boy did they suck)
I do remember Adam storming off stage during Los Rancheros
for a little bit because the crowd was not shouting "Clint",
---- "Eastwood" back at him loud enough.
btw - Im pretty sure there was a thread of this nature here
before - If anyone can find and post? :)
If not, lets all just start a pool of when Cliff will chime in with a "RBNW is a liar" post.

OH NO. Dad was a big KR fan. I did learn to appreciate
some of his songs. But even at that young age, I knew
there was something terribly, terribly wrong with that concert, believe me...
The only other 'state fair' show I've ever seen was at the
Ohio state fair round the same time when Robert Plant opened
for Stevie Ray Vaughn. ^
Read those last 7 words again for full effect ^
What about you S?
Im gonna guess Donnie and Marie Osmond's World Tour of the
Amish Country. You remember ~the Mandrell Sisters opened?
Special guest Glen Cambell? No? I heard the cheese sold
out in the parking lot that year was particularly good.
Or was it The Bay City Rollers 'opening' for the Village

My first concert T-Shirt was from Day On The Green #4 1978. Rolling Stones, Peter Tosh, Eddie Money and Santana....my bro bought me a T-shirt...."Happy Birthday Mick". It was a kind of aqua-green/blue with a big-lipped, multi-colored dragon on the front. I cut the sleeves off. It was cool....I was 7.

On my own - sorta - if Dad drop off and pick up counts as alone? Yes, February 1974 at the Spectrum. Tales From Topographic Oceans tour.
Without adult supervision of any sort? Grateful Dead, Tower Theater, Philly, June 1976. Unsuccessfully chased the same skirt all 4 days.

Re: what was the first concert you ever attended.... |
The last concert of the 70s version of Loggins and Messina. My family was driving all over Cali and we dipped across the border into Reno for the show which was at casino. Front table almost all the way stage left, right in front of the speakers. I remember my father complaining about the $15 hamburger he had to order for me (house policy, everyone had to order dinner).
We had been driving up the Central Valley for a few days and it was hotter then heck. My 8 year old car sickness made for many a pull off to the side of the road moments, which was not pleasing my father too much. All I know is that I had been promised AC at the hotel, House on Pooh Corner from the band, plus a ride down the Truckee River the next day if we could just make those last miles without any carsickness alerts. The amazing power of incentives.

Early 1968. Jimi Hendrix @ the UCLA Student Grand Ballroom. I was 22 and majorly into jazz. My next door neighbor was 16 and she wanted desperately to go to this show but her boyfriend was out of town, so she swung it with her folks for me to chaperone her. Oh my! I do recall her standing on her folding chair screaming during Wild Thing. And life was never the same.

I was gonna say that too: increadible
The Jacksons, with THAT set list? I mean...
Beatles @ Shea. Paul Revere & The Raiders 65.
George Harrison and Friends (Concert for Bangladesh)
The Shangri-Las 1965. Jane's Addiction Ritual De Lo Habitual tour.
Jimi freakin Hendrix. Mid 80s Crüe. Rush - Moving Pictures tour
Paul Revere & The Raiders 65. 78 Santana. Looks like
Ring caught 'God' a year before he was a complete drunk
on stage. And Run DMC, Whodini, LL Cool J, & Beastie Boys in Oakland 1985??!! I bet the crack flowed like wine that night.
Those ARE some spectacular firsts S&R.
If there has to be a 'best', gotta go with a 69 Grateful Dead show, with the 84 as the runner up.

at the time, I loved the acoustic set, but was a bit nervous because it seemed that the entire band hadn't actually made it to the show so was worried it might be cancelled. I didn't appreciate at the time that Dark Star was a special treat. Well, I guess in 1969 it wasn't that special, as it was played often.
The entire experience was a life-changer, in a good way (a 14 year old surrounded by real 'heads--oh my)

and I think within the next year or two, I saw Jimi Hendrix in Ft Worth, Janis Joplin in Dallas, Santana in Ft. Worth, and The Doors in Dallas (2nd Show, Jim Morrison was basically drunk with his back to the audience the entire time). and about any other show that made it to Dallas/Ft. Worth.
One of my most memorable shows from that period was Lee Michaels, just he and Frosty on drums. Stormy Monday.....
(I'm thinking he might have been the opening act for Steppenwolf, but I remember Lee better than Steppenwolf)

Impressive. Good thing you saw Jimi, Janis and Morrison while you had the chance! I'm guessing you probably feel the same way about Santana. I doubt whether his shows got any better after that. By the mid-70s, his shows had become 2-3 killer songs and a bunch of B-side crap peppered in to fill out the sets.

Re: what was the first concert you ever attended.... |
little did I know it was just in time. Although the "concert event" surrounding all these was a big deal at the time (as was every concert I went to), in reality, my recollection is that the Hendrix concert was mediocre (seemed to be "phoning it in"), Janis was a bit out of it and/or there were sound problems (I recall being disappointed), and as I mentioned Morrison was drunk by the second show. But they were all fun "events"....
Of all these shows I mentioned, Santana was probably the best actual show. He was hot off of Woodstock and his first album was just released. And the opening band was The Elvin Bishop Group (doing excellent R&B).
I used my Christmas money that year to purchase:
Led Zeppelin II
The Band (the second album)
Santana (first album)

I'm old, too. My first concert was Eric Clapton in 1974, in Memphis. I was 12 and in the company of my older cousins, i.e., 16 and 17 year olds, who were supposed to be "watching" me - hahahahahahaha. None of our parents had the slightest idea what went on at rock concerts.

sorry, but if you were only 12 in 1974 it would be difficult for you to be considered old around here

Re: what was the first concert you ever attended.... |
What really pisses me off is that from recent pics Ring Lee O looks better now than either of us did at 12...old, and ugly; can it get any worse, Bill?
Don't answer that...

I'm sorry, but you're not old if your were 12 in 1974. I was 28 by then and a raving Deadhead. See how wonderful this forum is? It's the fountain of youth.

The Monkees with Jimi Hendrix 1967 Forest Hills NY. My mom took me and a friend. Had no idea who Jimi Hendrix was and don't really remember him. I was 11 years old. Thanks Mom!

January 29, 1972 Jerry Garcia and Howard Wales at the University of Buffalo. Mahavishnu Orchestra was the warm-up band. Epic night. It was broadcast live on the radio, I'm still hoping to find a tape of that.

not as sad as you, you total f*ckin' loser.
Not so long ago you were writing that I'd only been to one Dead show, now you say I've never been to any show. Wrong on both counts. What you gonna spout next ?
Either way it's almost certainly gonna be wrong.
'new & improved' ?
Some chance from an old retard like yerself.

Re: what was the first concert you ever attended.... |
"The Poodle Lecture"
In the beginning GOD made 'the light.' Shortly thereafter GOD made the poodle-as you can see by this model that we have in front of us. When GOD made the poodle initially it was a very handsome sort of a dog-it had HAIR, HAIR, HAIR, evenly distributed all over its charming canine poodle-shape body.
Shortly after the construction of the poodle itself, GOD made TWO big mistakes. The first one was called MAN, and the second one was called WO-MAN. WO-MAN looketh upon the poodle and saith unto herself, "This poodle, with hair evenly distributed all over its body, is of no use to me for it is not SLICK, it is not STREAMLINE, it is not FASHIONABLE, and in many instances it is REPULSIVE because of the brown things attached to the hair on the rear part of the dog, and I must have this dog modified," so he turneth onto MAN, and saith unto MAN, "SUCKER, GO GET A JOB!" And MAN, being the chump that he was, wenteth out and wenteth forth and lefteth the cave, and went into the world itself and gotteth a job.
Whereupon he returneth to the cave with his MONEY, and the WO-MAN looketh upon the money and said, "SUCKER! Take this money and go buy me a pair of scissors, whereby I may clippeth upon this poodle and modify it to my own personal taste and secret moist innermost DESIRES." And the MAN, being the chump that he was, went out and bought her the poodle clipping shears and broughth 'em back to the WO-MAN and handeth the shears to the WO-MAN, whereupon she GRABBETH the poodle thusly . . . and with a DEFT, SWIFT, DENSE ECUMENICAL PATINA (Talk about it!) of STROKE (Talk about it!), she clippeth upon the poodle, near the FETLOCK, all across the THORAX, in the MEDULA, and . . . right near the cappuciano o'er here, and streamlined that sucker until it looked just like this, with little feet sticking out and a little ball on the end, making the dags very easy to remove, and she putteth the poodle in a quasi erotic sort of a position, near where she was sprawled out on the cave . . . stucketh her leggeths up unto the air, "Buf," like this, exposing to the poodle the central core of her desire, and looked deep into the poodle's eyes and said these piquant little words that we shall not soon forget:

Re: what was the first concert you ever attended.... |
Jimi Hendrix @ the UCLA Student Union Grand Ballroom - February 1968. I was 22 and a jazz buff. My next door neighbor who was in high school really wanted to see this show but her boyfriend was out of town. Her mom talked me into being a chaperone. Mind boggling and life transforming. I remember nothing and everything. I do recall the encore where he played Wild Thing and she was standing on top of one of those folding metal chairs screaming while I tried to keep her from breaking her neck. It was all downhill from there and I have the hearing aid to prove it.
