Re: TDIH Vegas |
The pilot was a friend, a highly skilled pilot he was...but most assuredly having little to no regard for the "law". It was his idea to do the tour that way. There was an event a couple of years later where he had to make an emergency landing in his experimental plane on a major freeway in the Bay Area...the plane came to rest at the exit ramp for...wait for it...
St Stephens Drive, just before the Caldecott Tunnel in Orinda. There was photo in the local paper with the plane on the shoulder just below the St Stephens sign.
He was our spiritual leader, an old timer (probably 40 at the time) who could spin yarns about Pigpen for hours on end. He even tried to form his own church...something to do with N2O - IRS said NO F'ing Way! What a crazy wild time it was. The Dead were still way under the radar so we had the run of the place from mid '82 until the '86 Greeks. On the rail, Phil's side - every show. We had a system. Strong guys stake out the space, make room for the pretty girls to dance right at the band's feet. Grandfather claused in the old timers and we had our own semi-private party at the rail at the Greek Theater. We were a very diverse group, from 16 year olds up to our Grateful Grandma - who was the source of our miraculous sugar cubes.
Those sugar cubes are why I can still remember details...like it was yesterday.
