new OTR |
I'm a relative newcomer to OTR (about 2 years since I first started listening to the Shadow). I've been a fan of long-running classics like Boston Blackie and Let George Do It, really fell in love with near-forgottens like Ghost Corps and Moon Over Africa and have really enjoyed I Love a Mystery/Adventure but my absolute favorites have been Box 13, Rocky Fortune and Damon Runyon Theatre. I was hoping for some suggestions for a new show I can really sink my teeth into. I recently re-listened to Damon Runyon and I'm just about done with my second pass through Box 13. I was considering hitting Rocky Fortune again, but would really like to take the time to try something new I can invest in. I often listen to shows when I'm driving for work and when I go to sleep at night. I've considered Harry Lime or Bold Venture, but, while I enjoyed the first couple episodes of both, I didn't FALL IN LOVE with them right away like I did those other three. Should I try to keep going with either of those? I'm VERY open to suggestions of any kind, as obviously (for example) Moon Over Africa, Damon Runyon Theatre and Box 13 are very different from one another, yet I really liked them all. I'll take suggestions for Soap Operas or Variety Shows ONLY if you really really REALLY vouch for them. I see the value in both formats well enough, but I'm not TOO interested in them. I am at the mercy of your expertise!

Well, it seems you're really into the mystery and adventure, but I've found my heart lives in old horror/sci-fi and even comedy...If you grew up watching Bugs Bunny and the like I'd strongly recommend the Mel Blanc show, he was the voice of many characters, a hilarious comedian...

Excellent! I haven't tried either Lights Out or Dimension X and the Mel Blanc is one I've never heard of. One of the key things has been sound quality, as I spend most of the time listening in a relatively noisy van, making it harder to listen to, for example, a lot of the 30s stuff. I think my driving is the reason I steered so much towards late 40s and 50s stuff, which ended up being really great, as I really feel like the onset of television really gave the radio industry a kick out of fear that they would be surpassed...which they did anyways, but the quality of a lot of the later shows is just amazing to me.

Ah, well I'm afraid you may find the audio quality of Light's Out and Dimension X somewhat lacking...they relied heavily on string instruments and creaking doors for effects, and unfortunately that can make you cringe, but if you can get past it, it's still wonderful story telling...as for the Mel Blanc show, the quality is awesome...enjoy, let me know whatcha think!

Thanks! Will do. I hate to dicriminate. I try to at least sample a little of everything, but sometimes I get limited by what I will be doing while listening. Hard to listen to The Shadow or other horror stuff when I'm trying to sleep (random screams as I'm drifting off...not preferable) and sound qualilty is key when I'm in the van, as crisp sound is the best to combat "van sounds".
