35mm Stock Footage Aspect Ratios |
This is a wonderful and entertaining collection, but I notice that often the films are cropped to an incorrect aspect ratio. For example:
http://www.archive.org/details/WingsoverGoldenGateBridge_BThe missing portion is usually obvious during the film (also in Part i) but most dramatically obvious at the end of Part II, in which the bottom of the end title card is sliced off, almost entirely eliminating the music credit. Quite a few other films I've checked, all shot in the Academy Ratio era, have also been cropped in this fashion.
This one, on the other hand:
http://www.archive.org/details/8539_R458RC_12-8-9_1622_LA_colorwas shot in scope, but here isn't unsqueezed enough, showing at about 1.85:1 rather than 2.35:1, leaving everything squashed horizontally.
I should point out that this is the case viewed online with both the html5 and Flash viewers in two different browsers, as well as when viewing the downloaded 720p file offline.
I'm not familiar with the IA's operations, but is there a possibility these can be fixed if pointed out to someone?

Re: 35mm Stock Footage Aspect Ratios |
I'll check the transfer on Wings Over the Golden Gate. I have a hunch that the film itself was printed off center, but I'm not 100% sure.
As for the second instance, you're right -- I'll unsqueeze the file to Scope aspect ratio and reload. Won't be until next week, probably -- plate overfull right now.
Thanks for pointing out.

Re: 35mm Stock Footage Aspect Ratios |
Thanks! As I said, I noticed a number of other films also seemed to be cropped top and/or bottom. Most would have been shot Academy Ratio and should therefore fill the screen, but some are showing at about 1:1.66, which would generally only result from cropping. Would it be helpful if I kept a list as I browse and post it?
Thanks again.
