Re: Predictable rhythms |
Nerd Alert.
Its pretty fascinating ring...Its pretty much using the same principles that Differential Equations in that the rate of change(or predictability) of the rhythm directly affects the overall enjoyment of the music. You have two constantly changing relationships that are linked. More repeatable equals more enjoyment in this abstract.
The way it was explained to me when I took DiffEQ was to think about a homicide investigation. The temp of the body is affected by the temp of the air, and both factors in the relationship are directly related and constantly changing. SO, cooler it is - the faster the body will cool. Kinda morbid but it makes the point perfectly.
This is crazy right here -
"Although music compositions are intended to be performed, the fact that the notated rhythms follow a 1/f spectrum indicates that such structure is no mere artifact of performance or perception, but rather, exists within the written composition before the music is performed"
So when the rhythm follows this structure the music is already proven good without even being played yet?
That's a bold statement...

Re: Predictable rhythms |
It is fascinating, a bit much for my tiny brain. You're right though, the implications of it being proven good before playing are a little boggling.
If the Grateful Dead played in the forest, and no one heard them, would they still be a great band?

Posting links to PNAS articles? Great what's next, Nature? If that is where this place is heading i could just go back to doing some real work.

Sorry :) My real work involves looking at a lot of science that I don't understand. I only woke up for a minute because it was music related, and thought instinctively, "Belongs on Grateful Dead board."

You mean all it will take to divert you from this place is posting the lastest riveting article from the New England Journal of Medicine about the chemical make-up of an investigational drug for the treatment of anal warts?
I'm on it.

What? No comment on "anal warts" and "I'm on it"?
I thought I served up a fat ball on that one. C'mon guys, pick it up.

Wait a minute..."he's being removed" as in you can't report or participate directly, as YOU are the anal wart in question.
Unless anal warts have publishing rights these days; maybe so...elb? Any in your domain? Er, publishing fields?
I've read some papers by bottom-dwelling butt-munches, but never stopped to consider if they had been befallen by anal growths of viroid varieties...

Re: Predictable rhythms |
Let us pause a moment to celebrate the perfect example of a hijack.
From music theory to an anal wart's publishing rights (or lack thereof) is exemplory. Perhaps they are already unionized, as in Anal Warts Local 232. Let's hope they don't go on strike. That is a picket line no one would cross.
Any way, I must apologize that your comendable use of subtlety in the "being removed" comment did indeed escape my notice at first. But now on review, I stand corrected and feel compelled to reaffirm you as a supreme pain in the ass.
Anal warts unite!

Excellent; just wanted to make sure nothing went over your head, or in this case, like a slow grounder taking an odd hop, right between your legs.
Where the Hell is Rob, anyhoo? He's got to have the low down on the Brit warts?

If neither booze or anal warts will bring him out, I doubt anything can....for now at least.

Re: Predictable rhythms |
It's been so nice and peaceful, but I hear an AZ plea. So, this is for you WT. I figure I'm probably the wart/fissure that may be the one to conjure Screwtape. My smart-assery many months back is now fully paid, especially if he comes back. (shudder) The following clip is maybe who he is.
