The 1950's was a golden age for advertising films. Good color stock was finally affordable, big US companies were flush with cash, and Jam Handy just happened to be at his cheesiest peak. Throw in the hi-tech consumer products of the day from RCA, and this is what you get. Every once in awhile I used to see old RCA console hi-fi's and stereos at thrift stores or yard sales. Wish I had bought a few. Beautiful cabinets. They used to be dirt cheap, but the retro style fad has sent the price through the roof.

"How to Listen . . ." has great late fifties interiors, but they're strangely empty. One interesting thing about this film is that we see the Smith men in what seem to be family homes, but we never see their families. Obviously the Smith men's fixation on their stereos has driven their wives and kids out of the house. Their kids are probably down at the burger joint listening to Elvis on a tinny old jukebox.
