If what you are referring to on the title screen is "copyright (symbol) Pax Films 1937" there's nothing "cryptic" about it.
However, there is a Janus Films imprint barely visible in the first frame or two that casts a heap of doubt on this version.

It is definitely not PD.
Its US copyright, had it ever lapsed (I haven't bothered to check), would have been restored by the Uruguay Rounds Agreements Act on January 1st, 1996.
The film has a least one non-American
author from an eligible source country (French composer Arthur Honneger), was under copyright in France on January 1st 1996 (
French copyright terms run for the life of the longest surviving author [director, writer or composer]) plus 70 years, so no film made after 1925 can have been public domain in France as of January 1st 1996), and was first released in an eligible country (France), more than 30 days (
actually over half a year) before its US release.
