Dave's Picks # 1: 5/25/77 ...anyone else ? |
Has anyone else got this ? Sure sounds good to me ! I reminds me not to be too jaded about this stuff . Yes I know May 77 is overrated, but not by much !
That said, sure happy that the next one will be a 74 show .

Re: Dave's Picks # 1: 5/25/77 ...anyone else ? |
Yes, I received mine the other day but have not had a chance to give it a thorough listen. Of what i have heard, (most of set one, the TOO before Wharf Rat), i have really enjoyed but that may be because it is one of my two favorite shows from May '77. I can't say that in listening to it, that i was blown away by the sound. I think the last Charlie Miller transfer of this show was really good and if this is better i suspect it is not that much different. I did not do a side by side comparison so it might be that my mind is playing tricks on me as it is apt to do when trying to remember such things. This was not the case with the Eurobox which i could tell instantly was different (and imo much better) than anything versions of those shows that i owned.

I've been astounded by the sound quality of the Europe 72 material - still plugging through it one disc at a time.

Agreed. I just did an hour or so's worth of side-by-side spot checking. The official release doesn't sound noticeably better, or even different than, the latest CM. IMO, anyway.

Re: Dave's Picks # 1: 5/25/77 ...anyone else ? |
I've listened to a good bit of this so far. I think the quality is very high. I think the key on discussing quality is to compare it to other releases of the same period. To my ear, DP 3 is a bit dull sounding, but not necessarily due to the playing. Dave's #1 just sounded big and bright and energetic on my car speakers.
As for the show, I have had most of it played but I haven't really listened intently to much of it. I had on the Mississippi Half Step in the car this morning and was blown away by that version. It's a song I like most of the time but for an opener, this one was crazy good. I listened to Scarlet->Fire as well and the main thing that jumped out was that Donna seemed relatively under control in the breakdown/jam section of Scarlet. TOO -> Wharf Rat was interesting though I tend to disregard most TOO's after the early 70s.

For what it's worth, I listened to this at a very high volume on very good headphones, and I think the sound is astounding. I think it is better than the Miller source and one of the very best sounding releases overall.

Re: Dave's Picks # 1: 5/25/77 ...anyone else ? |
Cranking it right now on my 5.1 system using DTS Neo Music mode (using HDCD encoding) and I would agree that the sound is clearer than DP3. Obviously the whole band is on, but I am continually blown away by Phil's contribution to this show. He is actively driving the tunes/jams in amazing ways. Maybe I should go see P&F (they're playing in my town this month!)
However, I have noticed one weird audio anomaly on Promised Land (has anyone else noticed this?). On my copy, the left channel pans back and forth repeatedly. It kind of reminds me of what it used to sound like when a cassette went south and would warble cyclically. I noticed it first on headphones at work and confirmed it on my computer at home so I know it's not a difference in setup, etc. It's very noticeable to me and distracting.

Yes you're right, there is a flaw in Promised Land. You're also right about Phil: He's laying waste and taking no prisoners

Yes, Promised land has that weird pan, I guess it is in the master tape (?)). Another thing I should mention is the digi-pack packaging in a lot easier to use that the all cardboard of the RTs series, or the E72 set .

I emailed the vault and DL confirmed that it is on the master reel. They tried their best to smooth it out.
I've actually never listened to the other sources out there before getting this release. Can you hear the weirdness on those too?

Re: Dave's Picks # 1: 5/25/77 ...anyone else ? |
Ive been meaning to respond to this thread as I gave it a listen yesterday. Its as good as E72 remasters and right up there with Warlocks box. I think Warlocks box has the best sound going. You got a real sonic landscape with palpable space in that release - really amazing imo. With this newest release it almost sounds like sometimes I hear some reverb or processing of some kind.....Cant put my finger on it but it reminds me of a DFX style plugin or some shit. Some type of surround-esque processing seems to be added. Just the slightest amount. Just one nerds opinion.
Its soo damn quiet too. Really tight sound on this new one for sure.
