I actually find this Winterland run to be somewhat overrated, especially when compared to all the spectacular summer shows that year. That said, I think this release has some excellent performances. The Dark Star> Morning Dew is a favorite of '74 for sure. The Eyes is legendary but unfortunately edited for some reason on this release (you can find the full version on the So Many Roads boxset).
The sound quality of this release I don't think is the issue, it's the mix. The whole band actually kind of has that "far away" sound, which I hate. I don't care much for the addition of the crowd noise either (although the crowd clapping along on Big Railroad Blues is fun).

It's not that I don't enjoy it, quite the contrary...I just think there are more compelling shows from '74 than this Winterland run. I must admit I have not heard every show in its entirety, so perhaps I should save judgement until I do.
