Just another mad, mad day |
I seem to have become fixated on Moonlight Mile, the Stones number covered by JGB in the mid 70s. It's just so different from other numbers of the period, with an amazing guitar tone. Anyone have favourite versions they can recommend ?

That is one of my favorite Stones songs,the strings on it are just fantastic.When I first got Deadbase I flipped when I saw it listed in the JGB setlists.It took a few months but I tracked down that Seattle show and the 3/30/76 Calderone theater show,I have heard one other version and it was similar to the other two.I think it was perfect song for the JGB,and it was a shame it didn't stay in the rotation and get a chance to blossom,I think Donna's lack of ability to actually sing dragged it down.You are the first person I have come across who shares my enthusiasm for this song,I wish I could have provided a recommendation,but I found it difficult to get a hold of the shows that the JGB played it,I think there are only 10 or so versions.

It is probably my favorite JGB song (ironically, since I'm usually not fond of the slow pace of '76-era JGB). I don't have recommendations for a particular date, but I liked 3/6...anyway, there's only 7 or so recordings and they're all from Feb/March '76.

I am also not a big fan of the ultra slow 76' JGB,but Moonlight Mile was a perfect fit for that era JGB,and had it lasted until say the Feb.78' tour it might have found it's voice there.It is a far better song than Harder They Come,Love in the Afternoon,Sitting Here in Limbo, in which nothing ever happened,just seemingly endless riffing and repeating of the title phrase.I can't speak for the accuracy of Deadbase,but they list 10 versions,the last being played on 4/2/76 at the Capitol in Passaic N.J.

Thanks for the rec - I listened to the show this morning. I think M.M. is played more cohesively on this than on the March 6th show that had grabbed me earlier this week.

Yes, but that would have to be 'mad, mad, week'. A change to wetter weather seems to have calmed things down a bit. BTW I liked your photo essay the other day. Do they play cricket in Nepal ?

The big news is that Nepal just beat the US in cricket ... something about World Cup qualifiers. Whatever that means. Not to be disloyal or anything, but gotta love it when a tiny country beats the US -- and I'm sure Nepalis love it that the US team is probably full of Indians and Pakistanis. Double the thrills: beating the US and the neighbors at one go!
