Ever notice how, in this film, all the big mean jobs are handled by the men? Oh wow, right, this is the 50's! Tsk, forgot about the connection between how big your machine is and your masculinity!

Women? Don't you mean the "girls"? The film's sexism aside, this film made me nostalgic. My father ran a small printshop and one thing the film doesn't capture is the overpowering smell of ink and how claustrophobically stuffy those printing plants were. They couldn't have been healthy places to work. But the workers shown in the film had good union jobs—jobs that are now gone forever. The factory buildings that once housed printshops have (at last here in the NYC area) been converted into high priced lofts. Today, that author's book would probably be printed in Asia.
