Re: Playin and UJB with Reprise |
Are you already aware of 11/10/73, 11/17/73, and 3/23/74? Those are the 3 famous Playin->UJB->Morning Dew->UJB->Playin shows, which I think are better than anything you can find after 74. In later years, check out 9/6/80 and 7/10/81. In general you can find a lot more Playin reprises than split versions of UJB, it was somewhat of a rarity. I
wrote a long post recently with some more information about 76 and after versions of PITB and I made a few mentions of the connection with UJB and relevant shows there, also.

Re: Playin and UJB with Reprise |
that Paully Pavillion show you listed from 11-17-73 also has quite possibly the best Here Comes Sunshine ever...IMHO. The way everyone in the band is weaving in and out of one another's lines in the jam is just plain sick...and Billy is ragin' it.

Re: Playin and UJB with Reprise |
would not argue with that...it's at least in my top 3 :)
as far as these Playin' and UJB sandwiches go, 11/17/73 is my hands down fav, i don't think 3/23/74 even comes close (but that's just imo)

I also think 11/17/73 is the best of the Playing palindromes.

Re: Playin and UJB with Reprise |
Agreed, 12-26-79 is a ripper, there is a good story about the pa the band assembled for this new years series as being ultra top notch. Listen for coltanes a love supreme tease in the middle of ujb.
Two nights after has one of my favorite stand alone ujb
12-28-79, also a ripper, but I really love 79.

Re: Playin and UJB with Reprise |
As mentioned by light into ashes, 5/19/77 is great. It is available as a DP. After a tease or two, the Playin' goes straight into UJB reprise, then there's a magical moment of silence before the band launches into a spirited version of UJB from the top, into Wheel, then a chilling China Doll, and finishing off with Playin' reprise.

Re: Playin and UJB with Reprise |
If you're still looking to expand your list (and who isn't?), here's a nicely jammed UJB > PITB > UJB ... and opening the show, no less! I gather it was kinda the Makeup Show after the Anniversary Show They Forgot Was The Anniversary, hence the special beginning (perhaps).
This probably isn't the best source (I'd bet on the CM/Joanie Walker), but it's got the most fun reviews. Love the stuff about Warren Zevon giving the same intro, set and jokes night after night, not realizing that, um, it was the same crowd.
http://www.archive.org/details/gd80-06-08.eaton.tome.7193.sbefail.shnfI haven't heard this, but turns out the Zevon set's here, too:
