Re: trivial fact? |
Not trivial. The answer is Dark Star.
From the deaddisc site:
"Dark Star was the first lyric that Robert Hunter wrote with the Dead. He had previously sent a few lyrics to them from New Mexico and was then invited to join them. Hunter describes the journey in the introduction to his collected lyrics Box Of Rain;"

Re: trivial fact? |
Not to disagree with you, but my understanding is that Hunter had written the lyrics to Alligator before giving them to the Dead, hence his first lyric. Dark Star was the first true collaboration between Hunter and the band, in other words the first piece they ever wrote together as a team.
Welcome to the nuthouse, btw. I've enjoyed yr posts thus far.

Re: trivial fact? |
The all-mighty wiki says:
"The first lyrics he wrote for the Grateful Dead were composed while on LSD, and mailed to the band from Arizona: a suite that would later become "China Cat Sunflower"/"The Eleven" (these were originally performed together for a short time)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hunter_(lyricist)
Dead.net suggests otherwise:
"Robert Hunter joined the Grateful Dead in the fall of 1967, when he arrived at a rehearsal just in time to write the first verse of the band's classic 'Dark Star.'"
