http://www.dead.net/sites/deadbeta.rhino.com/files/deadtapers/sept132010/trucking.html

This recording is from the vault and will provide an impression of how much better these 16 track masters can sound compared to most of the MP-3 files stored and streamed @ IA.

Of course, the playback system is paramount in terms of resolving every minute detail in the recording. PC speakers and I-Pods are simply noise. Up the performance and get a good hi-fi rig, it's healthier, safer and more enjoyable than an automobile! (unless of course you're a red-neck motor head.)

Gotta love these long & winding improv tapestry jams in and out of songs such as Truckin, The Other One, Playing in the Band, AM Dew etc. on this tour, yes?

I played the same segment from my sbd's as the clip provided, and I personally don't detect $450 worth of difference. I ran it by several people intently listening and they could detect no massive difference. Just my observation.

Rob, every time I see you respond to yourself like this, it makes me wonder what could possibly be going through your mind.

By the way, Mint jelly is your weakest fake name yet. You need to work on his personality a little more. Make him more believable.

I try to stay on the sidelines with all this, as it is unclear to me how you come to your assertions, but reading “I ran it by ‘several people’ intently listening...”, in the multi-poster context you propose, made me chuckle.

If you must know, I was angular, and figured that I had pissed off enough people with that handle and try to start anew. I was eating pistashios when I was reading the forum and my son calls them pismashios. I'm sorry I have a weak handle. Be glad it wasn't "cracken nuts".

I guess I'm not in the secret "inner circle". No worries, I'll just hang back and keep getting the shows and tidbits you guys post. Thanks

I'm not sure I believe you not Rob. But then again, who am I to judge. Im just another not Rob as well.

Believe me. Here is my angular post. I just wanted to give an opinion on the sound quality post. I have a wife and a kid and can't afford a $450 dollar set of discs no matter how good they may sound. It may be a feeble attempt to convince my own mind that I have it on my computer, in a comperable sound quality. At least I have it right and listen to the Grateful Dead and can appreciate it.

That being said, there are about a dozen or so people on the forum that I really look up to as far as knowledge (names not included for fear of leaving somebody out). I am amazed at the knowledge they have concerning shows and history. I do appreciate their efforts in their posts, and take from it what I can. I also do not post much for fear of being an idiot in comparison to these people. That is why I usually sit back and watch. Sometimes it seems that when I do post I will usually put my foot in my mouth. Maybe I'm too thinned skinned on the archive.

Enough flowers and self pity, I hope you now believe it is not Rob. Actually my name is John. San Antonio, Texas First show 4-13-1988 Rosemont Horizon-Rosemont, Illinois.

I'm sure that there will be a difference in sound quality of the box set versus what is here on the archive. I'm equally sure that my ears won't be able to detect said difference!

Whoa dude. Take a step back. Whether you choose to believe it or not, the sound quality you get from a high bit rate mp3 is going to be almost the same as an aiff file, and I seriously doubt you could even tell the difference. Many of us have audiophile home systems, audiophile subwoofer driven systems for the computer and high end audio systems in the car. Did you really just put the "red-neck motor head" stereotype out there? Really dude? That's not too cool. Not the name-calling. Not here.

Sounds good, but this was a hastily-made mp3 for free streaming. I betcha the box actually sounds a whole lot better than this.

I'll agree with the rest of you folks that we haven't even heard what the box set will sound like. All the streams available at dead.net now are most likely straight transfers from the tapes (no extra mixing or remastering), so I would expect the release to sound a bit different. (*How* different, who knows...)

Though I am on a bit of a break, my sense of every early era show, and I have grabbed every one (DPs, DL series, recent RTs, save one, etc., etc) is that the official release ALWAYS beats whatever we "have" circulating.

I've never said "hmm, this just doesn't seem to cut it". The only exceptions to this rule were the oft discussed mid to late 70s DPs, released yrs ago, that often seemed "flat" to me, uninspired, and the consensus seemed to be this was due to how they were recorded/produced, and perhaps even "played" (my bias), BUT this hasn't been the case with any recent releases.

The operative word stated was an "impression" being a first generation transfer.

The problem with digital storage mediums, particularly MP-3 is the compression algorithm designed to reduce the amount of data. Lossless files deliver significantly higher resolution.

The problem with desktop and portable digital playback devices are the lousy internal digital to analog converters used in I-Pods and PC's, the cheap little amplifier I/C's that drive the headphone outputs that are then connected to either "in-ear" headphones or PC speakers.

The best performance available would be to transfer the digital signal directly out of the storage device (pc or ipod) to an "external" digital to analog converter connected to a reasonable hi-fi system.

If you are streaming from the internet, there is an affordable product solution from Logitech the "Squeezebox Duet".

http://www.logitech.com/en-au/speakers-audio/wireless-music-systems/devices/3817

If you are playing back from an I-Pod, there is an affordable product solution from Wadia the 170i Transport.

http://www.wadia.com/products/transports/170i/

Therefore, one simply can't consider PC speakers with subwoofer to be an "audiophile" medium.

I agree with WT that some of the 70's Dicks Picks were muddy sounding and that was the best they could deliver from cassette masters, particulary 05/22/77 Sportatorium.

Yes, I am one that really only listens via my "mid-range" home system, with decent JBLs, and never the puter. I do admit to having an ipod that I use for the gym, when I can, and use either MP3 or WAVs, and just due to the hphones/setting, it sounds good enough.
