New to the Dead |
Hey there. I'm completely new to the Dead, and I really like what I'm listening to. I have the 1986-03-24 show at the Spectrum, and it's got to be one of the most awesome albums that I own. I come here to you Dead Heads to ask you which, in your opinion, is the best show?
Please recommend me some shows.

Yeah, that's true for me, too, but I listened to the Box of Rain from Sean Many-Zeros' show, and it's wonderful. It had just been broken out in Hampton a few days earlier, I think (I'm no expert either, LOL); the crowd is ecstatic, and I think it would make anyone happy to hear it now, too ...

Not that there aren't some worthy 86 shows, epsecially pre-coma. Just none that I would consider among my favorites.

I'm not new, but I'm far less knowledgeable than most folks here and still trying to educate myself. One thing you can do is click on "Today in history" each day and sample a couple of things from different eras. These are frequently weighted towards 1990s unfortunately, which most (not everyone, but most) seem to agree is much weaker overall. The band's sound changed dramatically over time, almost schizophrenically, so there is a lot to sample. Don't listen to anyone who tries to make you feel bad if you like one era over another.
You can also try listening to the same show from a couple of different sources - for each show you can click "Check for other copies" to see what's available. There are soundboards, matrixes and audience recordings, generally. The first are the most pristine sound, generally, and the latter are often livelier - lots of crowd noise, which may or may not be your cup of tea. Sometimes that's wonderful, the roar of the crowd really gives you the feeling you were there ... and for those of us who at least a few times *were* there, it's a rush. Other times it's very annoying that people are talking over the music or shouting drunken nonsense.
Edit - I want to second the recommendation for 8/6/71 - can't go wrong with this for a newbie. Turn it up loud!
4/12/78, much of which is on youtube, is also good for newbies; so much of that good times feel.

Welcome to the Dead. One of my favorite cassette tapes was a fourth generation soundboard of 2-18-71. A whole bunch of songs debuted at this concert, it was an E.S.P. show (do some research), and it was Mickey's last show for a good long while ushering in an almost four year stretch of the Grateful Dead's best shows. You will obviously find a lot of opinions here, many early Dead supports, including me. Try this one from 1970 for some interesting drumming after Good Lovin' and then a great Truckin>Other One>Goin down the Road>Not Fade Away jam.
Bonus is that the New Riders play as well!

Welcome.
More than a little overwhelming, isn't it? I'm sure you'll receive many, many suggestions.
I'd be happy to email to you (and anyone else) a Word document in which I assembled one page on each of the most downloaded shows, 1966-1978. For the 500 best shows, you get a sinlge page with my concise summary, references to mentions in print, the setlist, notes from Deadlists or elsewhere, a review or two, and the URL.
I made it for private use, so it's not flawless, but it makes skimming through tours, years, or eras pretty easy. It also can be the core of your own document where you record which shows you own and what you think of them.

So welcome, again. This forum has its ups and downs, but I've never found a more knowledgeable, friendly, and generous community of Deadheads online.

As you can see , there is a definite earlier period bias , among a lot of us here .
But if you like the 86 show, chances are you might like the 80's and 90's Dead, as well as the 60's and 70's Dead . The other recommendations are all good .
Mine would be with all the stuff you can listen to here , to check out the different eras . Check the archive for "best of " threads . With the 80's, it is usually thought that the beginning and end of the decade has the best shows ( something from the Warfield-Radio City run would be good , say 10/31/80 , and some 89, 8/6/89 has an unbelievable Scarlet>Fire ). For the post Brent era , I might recommend 4/1/91 .

Welcome Sean. I'll admit I'm envious--your ears have many a great show to enjoy for the first time and you've come to the right place.
As a listener, I try to appreciate all eras of the Dead's music (even some of the post-Jerry stuff) but it seems the early 70s are a good place to start. '76 and '77 are also popular years, but I recommend listening to 8/13/75 (aka One from the Vault) before heading into the big post-hiatus shows. It sets up the new direction they were taking at the time perfectly.

Seriously though, welcome. My advice to you is to not take advice from any of us in here as none of us have any bias or preconceived notions or rabid, foam-at-the-mouth opinions about any of the following:
1. Which era is better than another
2. Soundboards vs. audience vs. matix recordings
3. Pig vs. Keith vs Brent vs. whoever
4. Donna vs. our eardrums
5. Whether or not you needed to use pharmaceutical enhancement to enjoy or "get" the Dead
6. Bluegrass vs. everything else
7. Sheep or cows
8. Feeding or starving trolls
9. Left vs. right, conservative vs. liberal, red vs. blue
10. Federal Reserve vs. all of us
11. Ad nauseum vs. etc.

Sean, you will get many opinions on different eras. Don't be swayed right off the bat. Go with what you like. The archive has so much I'm sure you'll find your favorites. My advice, go to
www.setlists.net. You can filter many ways, year, songs, venue ect. There is also a direct link to the archive from there.
Once you get your feet wet hope you hang around the forum.
