Re: Visions of Johanna |
It always amazes me that he took on this wonderful song at a time when he was finding it harder to remember lyrics. I know they had teleprompters, but it is ambitious. Just having read the 'GD or JGB' thread below it seems to me this would have worked equally well with either. Did JGB ever play it ?

Re: Visions of Johanna |
According to handy dandy Garcia Base , that would be a no snori .
Times GD played ,
3 - 19 - 86
4 - 22 - 86
2 - 21 - 95
2 - 24 - 95
3 - 18 - 95
3 - 30 - 95
4 - 7 - 95
7 - 8 - 95
Hmm . All in '86 or '95 .

Re: Visions of Johanna |
You may be on to something here . In times of grave distress, he reached for this song . When Dylan wrote this song, and was playing it live , he was heading for a cliff . As much attention as the electric sets get from 66, the acoustic sets may even be more powerful, and scary . He sounds like a man who wants death to annihilate him, ( listen to those 'Tambourine Man's from that tour!). And had he not had the "motorcycle accident" , who knows .

I didn't know it was revived in '95. I saw it in '86 and it was profound Thank you for pointing these performances out. I've got me some listening to do. That song never fails to give me CHILLS.

Re: Visions of Johanna |
I thought they put on a great show -- especially considering how amazing all the other bands were that day,
Though, I wish Phil and Bob would let John would sing the Jerry tunes. When John was taking his turn with The Wheel and Jeff and Sunshine were singing along, it really just felt so right.
And of course, the full-on Terrapin encore was delicious.
You were there too, right?

Re: Visions of Johanna |
I agree - excellent song choices -- all Jerry!
We were stage right about halfway back to the soundboard. It wasn't crowded until Furthur came on, but then it got to be a bit much (though there was no way were gonna move to a less crowded spot).
It was the first time I'd gone to the Gathering of the Vibes (never been a fan of the name...) and it was a much nicer scene than I expected.
I just hope next summer finds Furthur continuing to play smaller venues..

Insane jealousy here ... we saw the signs for "Vibes Camping" from the highway and we tried not to get too grumpy.

Re: Visions of Johanna |
I don't see any reason not to be there except that things are touch and go with my folks, and November is too far off to predict.
