Re: use OGG or shn! :) |
Yeah, OGG is still new and doesn't have a *lot* of pentration yet, but it's coming on fast. Up until maybe a year ago, the Rio Karma was the only portable that supported OGG, but then the format became the darling of the audiophile circuit, after it stunned the crowds in a series of well-publicized double-blind tests, so the vendors have been getting on the bandwagon in a big hurry. (The vendors also like the fact that it doesn't require license fees, unlike MP3, AAC, WMA, etc.) There's well over a dozen portables supporting OGG now, and just a couple of months ago, some company put an OGG decoder on a chip, which will make it even cheaper for the vendors, so I expect to see OGG on a many, many more portables in the very near future.
If I had an ipod, though, I'd probably download the SHNs/FLACs and transcode to AAC, which is also much better than MP3, though not as good as OGG. But the lack of OGG support is one of the main reasons I *don't* have an ipod! :)

Does OGG have the capability to insert DRM inside of it like AAC/WMA? Since it is open source, I'm sure the potential is there but I don't think they've gotten that far yet. Which may just be the reason that Apple and the other biggies haven't created support for them yet.

Ogg Vorbis support in portable digital music players |
No, it's not true. There are portable digital music players that support Ogg Vorbis. Xiph's wiki keeps a list of them at
http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/PortablePlayers so if you're in the market for buying one (or buying another one, for those of you who already own a portable digital music player), check out this list.
Rio's Karma, for example, can play Ogg Vorbis and FLAC files.
I plan to get a Neuros device because not only does it play Ogg Vorbis, it also records CD-quality WAV files (via line-in or mic input), and it has free software firmware. I can learn how to program it and add functionality to it. There are some other users who have already done this and I hear that someone is working on adding FLAC support (it would be neat to record to FLAC so you can get almost twice the storage space without losing any quality).

Re: use OGG or shn! :) |
My problem exactly! All of this "support lossless formats" is great in theory, but neither of my two mp3 players will play OGG or SHN or FLAC. So until we/they can figure out a good hack, I'm stuck using mp3s. And frankly, the sound quality difference just isn't that dramatic in most cases. YMMV...
