One of the songs I used to dislike but has definetely grown on me. Any suggestions? Preferably one with a full ending, no Stella Blue sandwich

Subject: First of many to come
This was the first Hampton, pouring rain and da boys arriving late did not hamper the vibe.The locals were getting their first dose of the deadhead world and they welcomed us(and our $) with open arms. The scene outside was a reunion of sorts with Southern and Northeast heads meeting up with the diehard westcoasters. Yellow school buses with VW Buses mounted on top of them, stir fry, bracelets, bartering and smiles were the theme for the next 13 yrs. This copy here is a welcome one since I had and Aud copy that was rather hissy. I remember having one of the light bulb coming on moments during Stella when my misunderstandings of the band melted into beleif that there were in our hearts and minds.what other band achieved that?

7-25-74 Chicago International Amphitheater - out of a lovely Dark Star. The next day's newspapers were saying in their reviews that the band had a band meeting and decided that night, that, to paraphrase from memory, 'if they can't afford to tour and do it right, then they don't want to do it at all'. Could explain - given the nature of this song - this emotive, if not slightly scattered Stella Blue.

You're right about the scattered Stella, maybe Jerry was still caught in the slipknot. One thing I like about this one is how Billy follows Jerry's guitar picking on the outro with tom rolls, cymbal rolls, snare rolls. Good example of musicians really listening, watching each other, totally in synch. As for 5/13/77, very, very slow which is a good thing. I do like how they come out of this into goin' down the road. Fun show all around

Do these shows exist in the vault? Now that would be a road trips I would buy as it would likely meet all of my criteria: A great show and a significant upgrade over what's available. (I would also like to see December 1972 be released, especially 12/10 or 12/15)
By the way, one of the better later day Stella's is from 6-28-88. The ending Jerry solo is excellent.

Just heard Willie Nelson doing Stella Blue. I dig the way he understates and lets the words carry the message. Mastery. I felt, somewhere around the second verse, that Jerry was listening with me. An extraordinary feeling. He was very proud of our songs. At their best his melodies are as good as any and better than most. Stella Blue is unique. Nothing else like it. The Major, major 7th, suspended four to the 4th chord which opens it, then the drop to the minor in the ninth bar, set a dark and wistful mood that couldn't be more accommodating for the lyric, as well as standing beautifully without it. There's no feeling the words could exist in any other setting or that the setting could take other words. I like that about it. It becomes a reality all its own.

when I hear this song and search for a meaning I find a very simple one...It is about a musician, maybe a blues guy, who at one time had a big hit, made some good money and then fell into depression, maybe from a "one hit wonder" and everytime he hears his old song on the radio it reminds him of his "broken dreams". He even gets up the courage, maybe somewhere alone to break out his old Stella and play her one last time..

Just finished reading Robert Palmer's "Deep Blues" and just started Alan Lomax' "The Land Where The Blues Began" and while any tune, esp. by Hunter, is open to myriad interpretations, I do find a lot of relevance in how the song affects you. Check out more food for thought here:

Listen to Space > NFA > Stella for full effect. I don't like the cut off ending and I can appreciate your yearning for a Stella with slow trickle down into silence but the intensity of this one must be heard. Jerry's mic is off for the beginning of the first verse but you soon forget about that!

Stella seemed to take on more and more meaning for ol' Jer as the years went by. Check out 3/21/94 Richfield and 8/1/94 Auburn Hills for two moving later-day Stella Blues.
