I have been working on a set of scripts to do
rough conversion of text to PDF, postscript and HTML via LaTeX. If there is enough interest, I would be willing to put up what I have on SourceForge or my own web server.
Right now, the system I am using is running Linux, but the same could be done easily under any other free *nix. Porting to Windows should be reasonable, as most of my work has been done in Perl.

look at the GutenMark program for a start.

I have hacked it successfully for lettersize booklet format the Bookmobile uses. I've typeset about 50 books so far and given them to the Archive. When Brewster gets back from India he will look them over and we can perfect the process.

I have been using GutenMark on Windows 98, with MikTeX and Ghostscript. The resulting tex file still needs a little hand tweaking.

The main problem is that the Project Gutenberg files need work for input. Many of the older ones still have end-of-line hyphenation. GutenMark ties to turn all-capitalized words into italics but does a poor job; it would be better to change them manually first into text within underline characters.
