I guess the reason I've seen so little 'bovva' is that it wasn't so prevalent when I was younger, and as I get older I prefer what we'd call 'locals' to the vertical drinking sheds that the excitable young frequent. It's easy to spot the difference when you visit London, so just find somewhere to relax and enjoy the ales - it'll be a while before the plasticated glass comes in, and I'd bet that the 'chain' referred to is Wetherspoons.

I tend to seek out the hand pulled drafts as they don't have them here. However I am pretty sure that every time I order one, the bartender gives me this stare and I swear he/she is thinking "listen yank, can't you just order budweiser and leave me alone!"

I think your right about the pubs though, as I have tended to find pretty easy going places. Only ended up in one bar in Oxford that was a little too young. Then again maybe my favorite pub was near there as well. A place called The Perch.
