Typically, the ZIPs containing book scans are huge. Would it be possible (assuming OCR is going to wait awhile) to have (low quality) scans of the first few pages for download? If I download .5GB, my hard disk is full. Having a couple of 100kB page scans to look at can help me decide whether a book is worth downloading at all.

Hi!
We're working on a few ideas to help people make up their mind about the investment of downloading the scans:

1. On all of our new books, we've got an animated .gif of the first 30 pages of the book to help our users get the flavor of the book. For example:
http://www.archive.org/texts/texts-details-db.php?collection=toronto&collectionid=torturesettourments00galluoft

2. We are working on making a new book interface that will just show .jpgs and have a next button. This will eliminate the need for downloading a plugin. These smaller .jpg files (only 72 DPI is necessary) will be available to download as a .tar file.

3. HP labs is going to give us .pdfs of all of the books in mid January. (Thanks, HP!)

4. We are hoping that more people will click on the "DJVU (applet)" link. It is a java version of the DJVU player, and doesn't require a plugin. We are working to make this load one page at a time, to decrease download time.

Thanks for your ideas! We love any feedback on how things are progressing in the text collection.

-best
Molly

This is a nice idea, which I immediately copied to http://runeberg.org/famijour/1873/
