Forum: classic_tv Subject: "Unpopular" shows?

Today was I reading some of the reviews of the various shows on this site and a few others sites I visit. Some of those comments I have to admit had left me scratching my head. Examples...

"unpopular 60's sitcom The Flintstones"...ah that show lasted for several years in its original run. Not too mention the spin-offs and the merchandise angle with the Flintstons and Rubbles being featuring on everything from vitamins to amusement parks to cereal. How is the Flintstones considered "unpopular"? Now The Jetsons..one can debate about that show.

I Married Joan has been called a "flop" on this site, yet I believe there were close to 90 episodes that were made of this "flop". 10 episodes..yes that would be a flop..but not 90.

The other day I heard on the radio that "The Facts Of Life bombed on TV"..interesting comment considering Facts ran for NINE seasons. Same thing more/less with Mama's Family, well it did fail on NBC but that show more than made it up by doing the syndication thing.

Maybe all of this is based on one's opinion. My husband for example considers the show "The Simpsons" unpopular because the writing on that show has gone down a lot within the last few years as well as the lukewarm reviews/box office money "The Simpsons Movie" had made a few years back. After reading the reviews, he isn't alone in believing that.

What do you consider a "flop" or "unpopular"?

I think a "flop" is generally something that only lasted a few episodes to maybe a half-season of 13 episodes, but it was different in the 60s. Today, I don't know what they do, because I don't watch anything "new" or "non-classic".

Most of the shows in the "Classic TV" section of the IA are from the 1950s, a *GREAT* decade for television. If the IA had mostly 70s or 80s shows, I wouldn't waste my time.

As for reviews and so forth, I pay little attention to what other people think, and just watch what I like. When I read reviews, my only real interest is whether the video and audio quality are worth my time downloading it.

That's my opinion, and you know what opinions are worth. ;)

Myself I wouldn't mind seeing shows from the 70s & 80s on this site IF it was something totally unusual and/or has NEVER been seen on TV since the show was first aired. However there aren't many shows that would fit under that category. Maybe "Real People", "Wonderama" or that sci-fi sitcom "Quark" or perhaps that short lived ( and funny ) NBC sitcom from 1979 starring Sharon Gless & John Schuck called "Turnabout".

That infamous "Turn-On" show from 1969, yes that was a flop but I wouldn't mind seeing it just to see what the fuss was all about bac then.

Wonderama I believe is in PD since the host of that show Bob McAllister passed away several years ago unless of course had FOX got the rights for Wonderama after their purchase of Metromedia 25 years ago. Either way the trick is to actually find an episode of Wonderama, not just parts of it.
