Re: Best Opening Song! |
Conventionally speaking - for myself, while attending '73 shows,
Promised Land was one of my fav openers. But, all-time, it's a
no-brainer for me. How about the openers with a dose of Jer's pouring his heart and soul out in an extended arrangement of
Sugaree?
3 of the best openers

I remember walking through the gates in Arizona to this opener. It was the first time for this one in a long time.

That's the one I was thinking of, Compton Terrace 12/6/92! They had not performed the song since 2/23/74, some 1213 shows between performances according to Deadbase.

This is exactly what I was reffering to (
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1992-12-06.schoeps.evans.gems.33956.sbeok.flac16). I had a reliable source who talked to some people behind the scenes prior to this performance. He asked if he could expect anything special. They replied, "yeah, they are doing a Beatles tune, Here Comes the Sunshine King" (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_King_(song). Obviously they didn't want to give it away.
We had a few great bust out tunes from days past during this time. '89 - "Death Don't Have No Mercy", '90 - "Loose Lucy", '92 - "HCS". Whether they were better or worse than before is a completely different topic for another thread.

I'm partial to shows that get off to a rockin' start....
Cold Rain and Snow
Bertha
Hell in a Bucket
Feel Like A Stranger
Alabama Getaway
I like Jack Straw, but not necessarily as an opener.
I also liked mid 80s shows that opened with Touch, until In the Dark came out and that song got so over played. Got to a point where it went from being one of my favorites to being one of my least favorites due to over exposure....

Re: Best Opening Song! |
All in retrospect, Bertha was overused and from where I sit now use it, perhaps incorrectly, to judge the quality of the coming show. Cold Rain & Snow was also always a favorite.
Like many others, I have a habit of returning to great quality shows when I need to count on good sounds while I'm working. Lately I've been returning to the '77 Swing Auditorium show, with the boys opening the year and the show with Terrapin. Probably better versions out there, but it took balls and really set the stage for a real gem of a concert.

Re: Best Opening Song! |
I saw them open a mid-1970 Fillmore West/Carousel Ballroom show with Morning Dew.
Epic indeed it was.
Garcia appeared as though in a trance as he hit the opening chords... there was no formal introduction/announcement before the set started that I recall, (I've probably forgotten it).
In any case, a dramatic silence or pause preceded Morning Dew, which opened their 1st set that night (a Thursday or Sunday, as it wasn't crowded, I had no difficulty getting right up the front of the stage directly in front of Garcia, who began the song standing some distance back from the edge of the stage.
I believe their show that evening started out with an electric set, or if there was an acoustic set, it was followed by a New Riders set, which either way really set the opening Morning Dew apart from any frivolity, giving it a serious edge...
Garcia was really into it... a most memorable opening song I'll never forget, though I've forgotten the surrounding details long since!

Re: Best Opening Song!! |
Thanks JS
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1970-06-06.sbd.miller.86951.sbeok.flac16Charlie Miller upgrade.
I like rockin' openers too, like GMLSG, Standing On The Corner. Viola Lee Blues, Aligator, Golden Road To Unlimited Devotion, and of course a fast Cold Rain & Snow with the hook (bridge) they dropped after early 1969...
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1970-06-05.sbd.bunjes-evans.28653.flac16Listen to the banter directed at Bear Owsley- very amusing, but pissed off a wee bit, wouldn't you say?
Btw, the quotes attributed to Bear which I shared in my review of 6-6-1970 were cut & pasted directly from a Bear communique without any changes or even (sic) spell checks.
http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-06-06.sbd.ashley.2172.sbeok.shnf Ah well, one can't be too hard on an artist who designed purple haze, white lightning, sunshine and other colorful party favors.
That was the kind, aand always preferable to anything from any other bathtub once Sandoz was in short supply.
A Girl Named Sandoz, by Eric Burdon & The Animals, with Zoot Money and Gladstone Odduck's Rescue Mission.
Long story, we'll have to look into that someday, Yeah!

I myself enjoy the Dog jam openings...but to each his own....after listening to many 2008 Dog shows I have developed a real enjoyment of the Dog...Bob seems to jam out most common songs and the current lineup really plays together good. The jam style of the Dog works good for my listening pleasure on my daily bike w/o`s....I enjoy Phils lineup also....... if he would just STOP singing....

Just a cursory search of dead base..it appears that Truckin was a fairly common show opener in both 1971 and 1972.
