Forum: general Subject: servers with multiple names

Hi all, I have a question about changing server names. We have a server - say a.b.com - that is in the Internet archive. We are going to be renaming this to newa.b.com. We'll keep the old name as well - both newa and a will be in DNS (with one of the names being canonical), and the SSL certificate will allow both names. But, we expect over time that people will increasingly use newa.b.com.

How will the Internet archive treat future snapshots? Will they be found under a.b.com? Or, will the old snapshots be found under newa.b.com?

Thank you

Forum: general Subject: Subdomains are stored separately.

The snapshots from "newa.b.com" will not be found under "a.b.com". The Wayback Machine only treats URLs with and without "www." the same, but anything else is stored separately.

If it weren't so, the wrong language of Wikipedia articles would be shown.

The Wayback Machine treats URLs with and without "www." in the same way, but any other change in the domain name is stored separately. Therefore, snapshots of "newa.b.com" will not be found under "a.b.com". It is important to keep this distinction in mind when changing server names to ensure that historical records are maintained correctly. I hope this clarifies your doubts!
