Forum: forums Subject: Setting custom thumbnail image for all kind of items, web player

To set custom thumbnail image for your item must be possible for all kind of uploads/items: video, audio, text, software ... And in a simple and easy way (for example to upload an image with a standard name or to specify the image in _rules.conf file). It is a big stupidity that the system generates bad thumbnail images and we have no choice, we must accept this.

I tried this way: first uploaded a short video created only from one image to have a good thumbnail for the item. But when I uploaded the movie that first good thumbnail was changed with a gray thumbnail since at the beginning of the movie there was such a frame.

An other "great" thumbnail generated by IA example:

Why is this impossible, why Archive.org cannot implement setting the thumbnail by the user if he does want this? Otherwise this would benefit also Internet Archive: if the uploader set a custom thumbnail no need for system generation using the movie, PDF, etc. Which means less work and load for the system.

There are also problems with web player image: it is a bad solution that the system uses all uploaded images for audio items' web player. There should be only 1 image specified by the uploader. We do not want a slide show as audio web player image...

Recently it was implemented the list feature. But setting a custom thumbnail is much more important. A good thumbnail image is essential for an item!
