1. I'm not talking about CREATION of DJVU files, I'm talking about READING the existing magazines that just happen to have been saved in DJVU format and original paper magazines were recycled. As sad as it is, these DJVU files is the only format they are available in. It would be really sad to lose the knowledge just because of the poor format choice.
2. I'd swear to whatever diety that at some point (and I don't mean a year ago, I mean earlier today), after uploading the file, I was able to flip through its pages -- but then, an hour later, I wasn't able to do it anymore, somehow??? Moreover, if I look at the derived item, it looks like the individual pages were extracted by the derive script to a JP2 format just fine. The only problem is that they are not showing in the visual reader.

the online bookreader never used djvu. it always used images, typically jp2, derived from the uploaded source files.

Of course. And that's what I'm saying: JP2 images have been successfullly derived, judging by the fact that they are available for download — but the online reader doesn't show that the file is available for reading. Example: https://archive.org/details/MPSIS-1985-1
