I think the band was playing pretty consistantly and tight in 89. Any recommendations of a show I might not have heard? I already know Alpine and Foxboro stadium as well as Shoreline. Any standouts or favorites?

and you know hampton. but those shows, while such a blast to be at, don't really live up to the hype when I listen to them now. I'm sure others will disagree.

I think they hold up pretty damn well. If comparing that Dark Star to one from 69-73 then yeah I agree but other than that I think they played pretty damn tight. Have you seen the video by chance? Jerry looks great, Bob looks positively crazed, it sort of confirms it to me that they were firing on all cyllinders. I also love the stealth thing they did with the name. THAT's the sort of thing I wish " the Dead" would do. That's how I know it aint all about the music on this tour they're doing but we already know that huh?

I've seen some snippets of the vid. Had a good friend that lived in Norfolk who always hooked us up for Hampton shows (almost made every run from 81 up to 89 - missed an early year). It was always a fun time there.

BD - The first set isn't too much to write home about, but in my eyes the 2nd set up to Death Don't is probably the most psychedelic the band had been since the late 70's.

Many discount the MIDI, and find it annoying and while I agree to an extent, there are a few times such as the Hampton show where it took everything to another level and levitated the building - until Throwing Stones starts that is...

I prefer everything 68-74, but I do love this Hampton show, also the first part of the 3/29/90 2nd set... The rest of it is just... meh.

Thought they might of opened w/ "gimme shelter".... they're still mad about the series... even with an act of God, the giants still go swooped.

A's vs SF (satan friend)...wrong highway I imagine

I was there smi2les. For the earthquake and this show. Listening back I don't find it quite as good but at the time this show blew my mind. It was my fourth show but first one in terms of fully 100% getting it

I was in an eastbay garage and watched the lights swing and telephones along the roadway move side to side.

My mother was around fort point with her from New Hampshire and filming her with the VHS running.

plus it was the 20th anniversary on Altamont

JOTS,

Not sure if these were mentioned but in addition to your selections try these..

6/21 The PPV show from shoreline (still my fav Deal of all time)
10/26 Great second set with a monster Dark Star
12/10 Again great second set with Hornsby guesting off and on through the gig. Spencer davis plays 2 tunes as well. I really like the jack Straw China>Rider to open set 2

one last one ...5/6. Big Brent night

Of course we're still friends. I would have played 2-14-68 but I wore out every copy I had because I've been listening to it for 10 years straight. You understand

As for ones you may not have listened too. If I remember correctly you are familiar with the New Years run. If not go there first. As mentioned above 7-7-89 is a must hear. I don't know what people here are talking about with 4-9-89, Probably the worst show of the spring tour if not the year but to each there own I guess. Better to check out The 4-11,12,13-89 Rosemont or 4-15,16-89 Mecca Shows for great stuff that is often overlooked, or just about any other spring tour show besides 4-9. Also, for the fall, The night before the Night Full of Diamonds 10-15-89 is really nice ta boot. All in all there are a few off nights but most of 89 is pretty strong so I'd say just grab any ol show you find and you'll probably be happily surprised.

JOTS- go long enough and the entire year will be recommended!
That being said, no one has mentioned the Brent-laden,and consequently fantastic, Milwaukee shows from spring. Also an epic DEW! I saw lots of shows that year and these stand out. Although kinda short, the playing is very tight and INCREDIBLY energetic!
