Any other deadhead headbangers out there?
I was emailing with some buddies and one of them brought up the Scorpions. Took me back to when I was 17, just before I stepped onto The Bus. Thought I'd share a my Monsters of Rock experience...
I saw the Scorps (as we headbangers call 'em) July 27, 1988 in the Seattle Kingdom on the Monsters of Rock tour. The line up in order of appearance was Kingdom Come > Dokken > Scorpions > Metallica > Van Halen. I was fully impressed with the Scorpions. I've liked them ever since I bought the Blackout album, and I mean record, at Fred Meyers when I was 12. It was Van Halen's first tour since David Lee Roth left the band. VH was promoting the OU812 release. Michael Anthony played a Jack Daniels bass guitar. At one point during the show he grabbed a half gallon of JD and downed a third of it in a single drink. Metallica was about to release And Justice for All and played a few songs off their new album. The played tons of songs off their previous release Master of Puppers, which is a front to back all time great mastery of work. Needless to say I was there for Metallica which was only second to my favorite Iron Maiden. Actually, Ozzy and Guns N Roses were in a three way tie for second with Metallica. A year later I saw the way and the light and got on the Grateful Dead bus.

mmmmm ... I'm not sure what kind of response you're expecting, but I'm with you on the Scorpions. Hardcore headbanging like only the Germans can do it. I've always loved that band, but I never saw them live.
Van Halen I've seen several times but always hated: Eddie's a genius but has no taste. Van Halen are also well known for their theatricality and stage craft - I'd bet you half of Phil's liver that JD bottle was full of apple juice ...

We debated at the time whether it was JD or juice. You can keep Phil's liver cause I think you are right.

I saw the Scorpions in '84. Saw Metallica open for Ozzy ('87?), Priest, Maiden (Powerslave tour). Too many others to list. The one band I never saw was Sabbath.

My first rock concert was The Scorpions and some start up band called Bon Jovi at the Providence Civic Center on the '82' Love at First Sting tour, I think. Got me hooked on going to concerts and started seeing Heavy Metal bands every chance I got. Actually, it was this mad passion for conert-going that finally led me to the Grateful Dead and the ultimate concert experience, but that's another story.

sure thing wine i seen the scorpions back in 82 at that providence show,also seen these bands which i still listen to every once in awhile. all in providence> rush/rory gallager> blue oyster cult with foghat/ black sabbath.ozzy,judas priest n iron maiden.jethro tull,.dio,j. geils band,ufo,alice cooper,of course zappa,neil young,and i cant remember the rest lol!! i do know my first concert ever was the motor city madman TED NUGENT 1978' cool post mr. wineland

My first concert was Jethro Tull. I think it was 1986. Saw it in the Paramount Theatre, the same venue as the Dead comeback in 1976. The tour was called, Not Quite the World Tour, More the Here and There Tour. The name of the tour always cracked me up.

I could make a list... So this may be updated periodically during the day.... I lived 80s Hair-Band, Arena Rock..
I recall seeing the "Monsters of Rock" Tour... Loved every one of those bands. Except Kingdom "Clone" was not there when I saw them.
I will neither conform, nor deny, that I had the required 80s "mullet."

being old enough and positioned right at the time (london) i have witnessed the birth of heavy metal. used to see live regularly led zeppelin, deep purple, pink floyd, jeff beck, rory gallagher, motorhead, etc in the late 60s > 70s >... still my fav listening beside the grateful dead
what qualifies me as the deadbanger is the fact that im still a big motorhead fan, right now my fav among the living rock bands. saw them live many times. the best and the loudest rock band on this planet, still perfectly functional despite it all

We must be about the same age, as I also saw Deep Purple (Dagenham Roundhouse among others), Zep (Ally Pally 72), Sabs (before 1st album in Bishops Stortford ! and later), and while putting on gigs had Motorhead for an unforgettable evening.
However about that time a friend played LIve Dead to me and I moved on to West Coast music and rarely look back.

ally pally 72? i was there too. front, dead center, right on the fence, 5 feet from the stage
me and a few others didnt look back. being in front and standing, we didnt realise that everybody behind us has seated down on the floor and that we were obstructing the view for at least couple of hundred freaks. when the band came out, the booing started and the beer and coke cans were flying all around me. only then i looked back, realised whats happening and forced my way down to the incredibly tightly packed floor
good times, bad times

I went to that too. It kicked ass but I threwup and passed out twards the end though...I chugged a bottle of peach schnapps in about 20 minutes....ugh. Anyway that Kingdom Come was an asian or German band if I remember correctly and they KICKED serious butt! GNR sucked though.. Good times!!

Second concert I went to was Point Blank>Iron Maiden>.38 Special. I think Iron Maiden had just released Number of the Beast cause I came with a shirt that said that. MTV was playing the Run to the Hills video (with the Indians on the bicycle built for 8) fairly regularly.
So Maiden comes out and tears the place apart. Then Eddy (remember that big-ass "robot" thing) comes out. These three stoned rednecks in front of me about shit. "Goddamn. What da heeelllll is that?" Guess they was there for .38 Special.

I can't imagine the 38 Special crowds reaction to Iron Maiden. Damn that's a funny visual. Why, that'd be like the Grateful Dead opening for Engelbert Humperdinck.

I don't know if this counts as 'headbangers' but I was a big fan of the Ramones and the 'Dead Kennedys' back in the day.
I remember being in some of the first mosh pits in the late 70's. We were young and dumb and you know the rest, anyway to release that pent up frustration when we were to drunk to hit on the ladies-lol.

Ditto on Ramones and DK, but for "heaviness" I saw Voivod, Soundgarden and Danzig at the Stone in SF in mid-80s - w/ members of Metallica and Primus in attendance. Bit different vibe than Jerry shows (although Ler from Primus is huge Garcia fan).

Mosh pits at Fishbone and Janes Addiction were fun, but I always kept on my feet for fear of being trampled. I can't imagine an Eastern European Slayer mosh pit.

neo-nazis, skinheads, drunks, expats, etc. good times (i survived).
fisbhone and primus did a tour back together down the eastern seaboard in around '89 (can't recall year); went to a lot of those shows. fun mix of crowds.
will say primus and public enemy at kaiser day of fires in oakland hills was one of the more interesting mix of fans (and then primus jumped from that tour to open for rush!).

Helmet, Leeway and Prong at the Ritz in Manhattan has to be the sickest mosh pit I have seen from the inside. It started outside down the street before the bands came on. I had bottles busted over my head before I even got inside by a several dozen skinheads that were welcoming people with hair to the show. Good times indeed.

I used to be a major headbanger. That was the only type of music worth listening to (in my youthful, my music's better kind of way) I went to see all the greats back then, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Metallica, Megadeth, AC/DC, Motley Crue, Van Hagar, Accept, Armored Saint, Kiss, Queensryche, and the list goes on and on.
Leather jacket, Levi's, Nike high tops and a mullet. Oh yeah.
One of the better shows I went to was a Day on the Green in 1985. It was Victory, Yngwie, Metallica, Y&T, Ratt, and the Scorpions. Headbanger heaven.
