You can go back in time for just 1 week... |
...ok these can be silly questions but here is a good one. You have a time machine and you are allowed to go back in time to see the Dead for exactly one week, 7 days, 168 hours. What week would you choose?
This is tough for me, because there are certain songs and shows that I really want to see but happened during different time periods. I would like to see the Dead 5 or 6 times too during that 7 run warp back to the past. Dark Star is a must, but I really want to see some 1977 shows...so I'm screwed. I really want to hear Eyes Of The World, but also Estimated Prophet. Shakedown Street is quite fun, but a long The Other Jam of 30+ minutes is a necessity. So I don't know...

I'm aware that the show wasn't exactally supreme but the vibe was really cool so why not right? That's where I'd go.

Since I'm somewhat obsessed with these Orpheum shows, I'd have to pick July 1976, the 12-18th. 6 awesome shows, featuring the great Orpheum acoustics, and pretty much every song they were playing that year...all in one week!

to see the GD...
It would probably be the Feb 1971 PC NY run for me..
or a Run from early to mid 68 coming in a close second
Other than that.. it would be a 1996 Widespread Panic run.. but I couldn't call out a specific week other than maybe something around and or including the 4-3 show

Those Port Chester shows in Feb 71 are great...but I don't know them well enough to spend my one and only precious week with the Dead. What I certainly would do though is listen to them 24-7 until I had to make my decision!!!

Ive got a thing for the shows at that venue ( cap theater ) because its a tiny little place that I grew up very near to (and never saw anyone at)
I used to pass by the place every day on the way to and from school for a couple years and until I was 16 I lived less than a mile away from it
I was lying in my crib when the GD were rocking the joint in 70 + 71 just across the river beyond the railroad tracks...
I even tried to score drugs when phish played there... but I hate phish so I never considered trying to get in for any of those shows

It would be really weird going back in time and seeing a live show that you've been listening to for years. You could impress people with your amazing ability to guess the next song - EVERY TIME!
Then once the week was up, you'd disappear without a trace. Whoever you made friends with that week would probably find it to be a very freaky experience.
Oh, and I've got to agree with the 5/7-5/13 1977 shows, if only to brag to my friends that I was really there.

Its funny how there is virtually no representation of > 1978 Dead on these forums. It's very rare. Oppositely, I see constant reference to 68 and 69! So interesting.
