If the film is indeed public domain, Then yes, They are OK to show outdoors. Just be carefull since some stuff like "The Gold Rush" is claimed to be public domain but really isn't, Although Charlie Chaplin's short films are indeed 100% public domain and CAN be shown outdoors.
