So even public exhibition outdoors of any of the films on the site listed as being in the public domain is okay?

If the film is indeed public domain, Then yes, They are OK to show outdoors. Just be carefull since some stuff like "The Gold Rush" is claimed to be public domain but really isn't, Although Charlie Chaplin's short films are indeed 100% public domain and CAN be shown outdoors.

It seems that lately the Internet Archive don`t really check the items before they move them to this section anymore
so you better check the titles if you want real proof

The Charlie Chaplin short comedies (1913/19) are known to be in the public domain
The only feature movie by Charles Chaplin in the public domain is The Kid from 1921
But only the silent version of this movie is because the musical score composed in 1971 by Charles Chaplin (considered by many to be one of his finest) is still under copyright!
