New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
We are looking to roll out an updated movie and audio player (which uses flash). (This is an updated FlowPlayer version that we've been using for movies already and are moving audio to use FlowPlayer (instead of XSPF player), too).
Look for a red link "try new player!" under most (sometimes to left of) the current audio or movie flash players.
Most notable updated features are:
real **full screen** for movies
audio MP3s can now seek fwd/back
FYI: we'll get rid of the fish icon (most notable in upper right during fullscreen videos) next week..
We are looking for comments and feedback.
Does it work for you? if not, what OS/browser/flash version do you have
installed.
Thank you all for helping.
--tracey, Archive webmistress and storage engineer (and avid video buff 8-)
PS: there are some known embedding issues onto 3rd party sites that I am working out still (part of that is due to having a site with 2 players simultaneously; part due to figuring out easiest options for folks embedding a player w/ or w/o playlists. stay tuned on that and thanks for your patience!)
OK as of May 14 evening, think the embed-ing should be working now.
OK as of May 20 the "don't have flash installed" was loading before the player loaded and was confusing too many people. now it will only show up if we DO detect it's really not installed.
As of May 23, the MSIE7 browser (bad) bug (bad tracey!) is fixed -- the one where the player never showed up and there was no linking to return to the old player. Sorry my dead friends especially -- I knocked out your music for a week 8-(.

Great new player for audio, but with Mac OS 10.4.10 using Safari I'm having a problem that the organge song indicator triangle just stays on the first song no matter what song is playing.
Thanks guys, keep up the good work!

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Thanks for the new improved player. I post most of my work to the archive and the flash player is more compatible with the standard flash players these days, making it easier for me to embed my videos into my pages.
I am collaborating to build a site using Drupal. I’ve been working to organize all my videos into one centralized page, within a Drupal site. I’ve decided to do so by embedding videos from the archive into stories within Drupal and then sort them into one page. The individual stories work great, play crisply and cleanly with no glitches. However, when I promote one of the stories (with a video embedded) to the front page, the video will not play (on the front page). I click the pause and play buttons on the left and it never loads. If I play click the story on the Drupal front page and open the story individually (as a node), the video plays fine (after a little while to load). Does anyone using Drupal have any similar experiences or suggestions to make the player work well? Hope someone can help.
Thank you kindly! Keep up the good work!
Nicole

You should make the player be able to pop out in a new, smaller menu.
This would allow someone to keep streaming music, video, etc while browsing and avoid accidental closure.

Now it works fine (no problem with Adobe Flash, good job!) and it's much clear than the old one.
Thanks.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
I'm not a big fan of the coding. Makes it a total pain to update videos on pages. When I put the player on my site I'd like to be able to update the URL to a different video occasionally and with the code format like it is on the new player its a drag. The old player is super easy to switch the vids.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
I run the Radiator's set list database at
http://www.ancientfurnace.net/ and I have all of the Rads downloads and streaming audio on LMA tied into the appropriate set lists simply by generating a link to the xspf_player and .m3u file. Select any of the shows listed in the "Audio" link on the nav bar on that site to see what I mean.
While I like the new player for listening to shows from archive.org, I would not be able to implement this feature on my set list site should the old player and the current embedding mechanism go away. All I need to do now is plug the url of the show's download on archive.org into a template and more or less attach ".M3U" to the end of it and tell it to run the xspf player residing on archive.org. It would be impossible for me to automatically embed a player with the new version.
Will the xspf_player and the current embedding scheme be going away? I will need to disable this feature and discontinue archiving the links if it is.
Thanks,
Gerry

I tried to use the Beta flash Player on one of my computers several weeks ago.....and it didn't work. I could not switch the viewer back, so I could no longer use the Archive on that computer.... I ended up using another computer to view the Archive.....Then.... I went back to the machine with the archive flash problem tonight and the Beta flash viewer now worked fine. Good Job! Thanks! You fixed it! It is a nice player and it now functions well on my MSN browser. I hope the problem is fixed for everyone.

The new player is excellent. It plays both movies and audio perfectly.i like the enlarge screen and audio controls much better. It is good you have left people the choice to view via the old player,as it will stop all the * anti new player * people from leaving masses of winging feedback complaints.
As yet,the new player,in audio pages, seems to take up some of the written audio sections, like the writing and the download links. It's no big deal though.
Well done, and thank you for adding the new player.

I too only listen to music on the new player, but I like it much better than the old. It's much easier to read, and it comes up more quickly, making whatever songs have been derived available immediately, instead of having to wait until the whole show is done.

Well I haven't used it for movies yet.
But using it for audio I noticed two things:
I can read the menu items a lot easier which is a plus.
The Numbers on the sidebar nn:nn don't seem to match
anything, which may be just the album I was playing or
it could be a code glitch in the time of play
computation.
It sounds good to me

I mostly listen to oral teachings, but I find it much easier to use. I would like to see a volume control. If it's there and I didn't see it, no worries. It's easier in that you don't have to leave the page to the player and when you switch back the player stops. I like the new player much more.

A big improvement over the current player, however, my only complaint is that when I enlarge it to the full-screen view and then click on my other monitor (in a two monitor, two screen, setup), it drops back to the small view.
I'm running FireFox 2.0.0.14, and the latest version of Flash.

Well, one thing as for audio goes, I liked the album art in the old player. Also, it would be really nice if you made a new player that was offered in a slim version as well. However, I do like to new slick look.

I tried it, then tried going back to the old one. Now everything I try to access on archive.org (loading pages, loading players, links with embedded players) loads verrrrrrrrrry slowly or the connection times out. I hope this situation ends soon.
Previous to the new player situation, there were often glitches, times outs, access problems to pages. I would rather see those problems worked out first before altering the players. The archive itself is rich, but it has a lot of access problems. I know the service is free, and for that I am greatly appreciative, but if it were more reliable, then it would be even better, thanks.

You might want to try the text-control plugin for WP and select "no entity translations" - this usually solves problems with embed or object tags.

I like the new player. I think it works much better.
Only one thing, maybe, will it suport playlist like the old one? I'm hoping as this was the ONLY thing I liked about the old player.
Good work on this new one, very nice.

Looks great, but I can't embed the new player on my Joomla! Website (neither audio nor video), the player just doesn't appear (the old one did). Since this seems to be a widely spread issue, could you please fix it?

Love it. Having the timing per track info shown is a big plus. Also, when I would stream GD shows through an Windows Media Player, it would often jump ahead to the next track for no apparent reason. This platform seems much more stable.
Big thumbs up from me.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Works fine for me (just tried audio so far) but I can't seem to embed it into myspace pages. Could be a myspace bug though since those are rather common.
I would like to mention that while the player is loading, it tells me I need to upgrade my flash, but once it's loaded, it replaces that message with the player. I think that's a little confusing, especially if pages don't load properly- it could make people think they don't have the correct version of flash installed when they may already have it.
Also, I would prefer a colorscheme which matches the rest of archive.org, but that's just nit-picking. I come here for the audio functionality, not to see some fancy-shmancy website design! ;-)
ps THANKS TO THE STAFF for all their hard work on the new player, and in general!

This looks great. It works well on my Mac with Firefox 3 beta 5. I'd suggest adding a link back to the archive.org page or some download options, sort of like the flash on

Questions...if the old player is embeded on a site, will the new player simply replace it? If not, will the old player be made defunct? If so, will files still play on a site or do we have to go to the all the trouble of embeding the new one? (I really hope this is not the case). Thanks

Fantastic! The biggest drawback of the old player was that there was no track time as you were listening, but you've addressed that and more with the new one. I also love being able to drag your position within a track. Works great.
I'm using XP, Firefox, and I'm not sure what version of flash I've got, but probably the most up-to-date version.

Dual Monitors + fullscreen |
I like to be able to set videos fullscreen on my second monitor (my television set) while I continue to work in my primary monitor.
But (on firefox and windows vista at least) If I click anywhere on the primary monitor while the window is full screened it will exit full screen mode and return to the smaller size.
Yes my issue represents a small minority, but if there is some easier way to make Esc the only button which closes the window that would be desirable.

My question has to do with the player working when a Mac using Safari visits my blog on Blogger. Currently, the silver box is not seen by Safari. There is HTML below and above where the audio box would appear.
Will the new player appear to and work with Safari?
Thank you,

Like the new player but....
I'm using windows me and the player didn't always load properly. So I installed the new Flash player and it loads more consistently. However, the new flash player seems to be messing with my operating system - randomly selected fonts, screen hanging, having to refresh constantly.
Looks like I'll have to forego the new player and reinstall my old flash player...until I can get round to upgrading my o.s.

I have been using Flowplayer on
my own site for video streaming for about half a year now and I am very content with it, especially streaming of .H264 and interoperability are great. I am actually using Linux/FF but have also tested it with Windows XP/FF. It works flawlessly - is that a new skin and a custom fullscreen script? Looks like my site needs an upgrade - especially the fullscreen option here is much better than those I have seen before

About having more than one player on one page: You probably can avoid problems with two players -or more exactly two instances of the same shockwave object- on the same page if you give them different IDs. By default they are all named "Flowplayer" which might lead to confusion.

It's awesome. Only complaint is that the dark grey "loading bar" is hard to see against the black background. I assume after the beta-testing you'll use the coloring scheme of the current ("old") version, which is perfectly easy to read.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Seems nice! Easier to read, song lengths are a big plus.
This seems like a small bug:
On all the LMA shows I've tried, when I load the page, it shows a little red arrow next to track 1. If I click on track 4 (for instance) and click play button the arrow stays at track 1. There is no indication what track I am listening to. After that song is finished and the player skips to the next track, it updates to point to the right track.
This might only be in an issue on my oddball client setup, Iceweasel 2.0.0.13 (a Mozilla variant) on Debian Linux.
In the old client, the track 4 would highlight when I click on it.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
I like the sleek look and new functionality (full screen, pop-menu, timecode and duration, etc). Those should definitely stay!
However the biggest issue is the reduced width of the playhead bar. It is difficult to scrub through the content when you are looking for a specific image or scene. The older version had a lot more play when you would click and drag the playhead and drag it back and forth through the film. This is invaluable as many times users/editors/archivists may only be looking for a single section of a film and not the whole peice. Perhaps a good solution would be to have fast-forward and rewind buttons, or in full screen mode (which is awesome) have a wider play head bar.
I am an editor and rely on archive.org for many clips in the project I am currently involved with. (We plan on posting our project to archive.org when it's completed
http://www.clandestine-movie.com/) Archive.org has been so great at drilling down the the content you need, via key word search, thumbnails, and movie preview. I hope we won't lose this functionality.
Thanks a bunch,
Marcus

Exactly what this site needed. Could make the fish a bit smaller. A feature that might be helpful is fullscreen within the web browser. Just an idea. I didn't check, but allowing for fast forwarding would be a good idea and save traffic, similar to how youtube does it. Overall though, an excellent job and addition to this web site. This is exactly what the internet archive was missing.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
The player seems to work well. But the controls are somewhat unintuitive:
- the use of round white dots for sliders is misleading; at first I wondered what they were, then I thought they were buttons. A vertical-looking bar of some sort works better as visual cue for a slider.
- Contrast on the control bar was inadequate on my computer; the sliders don't show well at all (see attached screenshot). [OSXLeopard on a MacBook Pro]
Otherwise, nice improvements, and the full screen mode is awesome.

I simply can't get it to work. The old audio player had problems, but this week this new thing has been absolute crap. I'm fed up with being told to download the flash player when I already have it and not being able to access the old player either. Funny thing, earlier this week / last week I was able to use the new player OK and did think it an improvement but now...

Hello, like some others, I am having big problems with the new configuration ("I simply can't get it to work. The old audio player had problems, but this week this new thing has been absolute crap. I'm fed up with being told to download the flash player when I already have it and not being able to access the old player either"). I was very happy being able to download the odd Grateful Dead soundboard shows (those not blocked having been released commercially - seems fair to me) - but now cannot do. Sorry, I am a bit of a techno-dork, is there an easy way for me to revert to how things used to be? I am not too fussed about showing videos, all I want to do is download (historic) dead shows. HELP - please, Paul H.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
that might be what has been agreed but, the introduction of the new movie/audio flash player seems to have scuppered this - at least in the short term. If you check earlier entries in this e-mail chain, you will see that I am not the only one affected. Whether the new configuration was really tested (on a number of platforms - mine is Windows XP which I would have thought was reasonably common) or whether it has just been rush-delivered at short-notice without proper testing, I don't know. All I do know is that I used to be able to download GD soundboard shows (those that had not been commercially released) and now - in the last couple of days - I can't. Instead, where the playlist download table/box used to be is an orange block saying you must install Adobe flashplayer and when you do (including doing a reboot to make the install permanent) you get the same "you must install Adobe flashplayer" message - even though you already have. So much for progress.

Thanks for your response. No, sorry, since the latest configuration change, I can't even get past the "you need to install the new inhouse mp3 player" stage - as I said before, when I install it, it asks me to install it again, even though it (definitely) has been installed. If you read through previous E-mails from others in this chain, you will see that other people experience the same. i.e. it isn't a policy problem, it's a (new/change) in software/hardware problem. Any help you can provide will be much appreciated as, without my 'DDD' (daily dead dose) I am likely to shrivel up and die.

I had a bad time with this new flash player. I finally tried Mozilla Firefox as my browser and got it to work, but it will NOT work with Internet Explorer, the browser I was using. Now that I am using Firefox it works great, but a warning notice that it may not work with IE should be posted! It would have eliminated all the frustration, plus the added hassle of having to switch browsers to stream music.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Sorry, since the latest configuration change, I can't even get past the "you need to install the new inhouse mp3 player" stage - when I install it, it asks me to install it again, even though it (definitely) has been installed.

Couldn't get it to show in IE here either, and no joy embedding. I had to clean my cache/reg to get the old player back in Explorer. Great in Mozilla Firefox though.

I've been using flowplayer myself for some projects, and can vouch for it for sure. It's a great player and I'm all for making it default here already.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Tracey,
Just tried it - the last effort was a huge step forward and this one is a very pleasant improvement over that. But...
The ffwd/frev icons (or what I assume are the fast foward and fast reverse icons skip to the next (or previous) TRACK for me (running Firefox on an up-to-date XP installation.)
The "scrubber" control does allow me to move quickly forward or backward thru the tune or video.
Also, no "tool tips" appear when you hover. Not to be greedy, but I kinda expected to see that!
Thanks a bunch!

sound quality is better, but the old player seems like it's wider/bigger.(?) Doesn't matter since I usually dl to Realplayer and watch most stuff there ion theatre mode. (I wonder if it will improve old movies I preview before I dl.)
Thanks for ALLLL your wonderful work!!

Huge improvement!! Love being able to see song length and where you currently are listening to in a song. Only thing I can think of that would benefit it is an equalizer. Nice job!

THank you for the full screen feature. I teach 20th century world history and I use your materials all the time. They really help the students understand the past. The full screen makes it so much easier to showin my classroom.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
I just can't see the new player anymore. For a couple of days it worked OK despite the inaccurate message about needing to install Flash. Then it stopped working at all, and there's no opportunity to "go back to the old player" either (please! how can I go back to the old player??). I've tied uninstalling and reinstalling Flash without it making any difference.
FYI, it looks and works fine - when it works.
I LOVE this site and urge its users to fling a few dollars at it every once in a while

Very nice. Works for me in Mac (Powerbook, PPC, 10.4.11, Safari). Main feedback: the big green "play" button before the player launches, is extremely ugly and amateur-looking! Please replace it with something a bit more professional :)

I twice downloaded the player from the link "Get current Flash version", and I still don't get a player, just the following message in the box:
"Internet Archive's in-browser MP3 player requires the Adobe Flash Player. It appears that you do not have it installed.
Get current Flash version"
using IExp.

The "new" player worked great....several days ago, when the option to use the old one, or the new one (which, at that time, did not ask to download the latest flash player), was actually an option. There is no option now, there is no red link to switch back, there used to be, but it went away. Now, I'm asked to download the new flash player every time I go to a show page.

I LOVE the new player! |
It's the best I've ever seen!
At first I wasn't sure how to get it to go fullscreen, but I'm technically challenged - (I didn't realize I could save your videos in my media player and watch them full screen for about 6 months! YES, I watched a teeny version of "How to Survive an Atomic Bomb" - by then I was hooked on the Archive!!!)
(A couple of my older friends new about it, but I've been turning everyone on to it - some of the movies are planned to be shown in a community setting! )
IA is one of our dwindling resources for alternate news, education, art, political dissent, of course the dead, ephemeral stuff, and kiiiiiii! It's the best!!!
love the new player love IA.

Love the new look and feel of the player ... just one comment:
The volume does not mute. In other words, I can move the slider all the way to the left and I can still hear sound. With the other player's volume control, I was able to mute the volume if necessary.
Cheers!

I like the new player. A much better look.
My only complaint is that when I clicked on the "comment on the new player" link, I was navigated away from the concert I was listening to. Kind of ironic, eh?
If it opened in a new tab, it would be perfect. Otherwise it's 99% perfect.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Great new update! Thank you for doing this. Here's my feedback so far:
Experience: listening to Grateful Dead music through the new player.
Positives:
- Sound is much better and smoother transitions between songs
- Interface is far better for the reasons others have outlined.
- The controls work better than the previous version.
Negatives:
- The volume seems to have a narrow range of control. You cannot turn the volume all the way down, for example, other than with mute. You should be able to move it all the way to zero with the slider control.
- The volume setting seems to reset when you switch between songs. This is very annoying as if I have the volume down I really don't want it to spike back up once the next song starts
Thanks again and keep up the great work!

Maybe this has already been mentioned, but just in case...I'd really like to have the ability to pop the player out of the page, so that I can continue to browse while listening. I'm often accidentally moving away from the page, like when leaving this comment, and whatever I was in the middle of listening to stops.

Re: Embedded player doesn't appear! |
ok you found a bug in our javascript which i've just fixed
(it barfed on an "empty" tag in the head while trying to "find" the script tag that includes the "players.js"...)
so the playlist and the player now come up for me when your page HTML
is on a test url on the archive site.
so now i am wondering if there is some part that is not allowing JS or flash loading from our domain...?
i also updated / shortened the HTML for the "embed this" link on our site. can you try updating to that style "embed this" and update your page and then we can see where we are then?
thanks, and sorry for these inconveniences.
(we appreciate your help and patience while we sort out some of the last issues, though! 8-)

No solutions (I am not the programmer for Archive.org) I went back to the old player, which works and looks fine.
I can say that MS did something to Quicktime, so I had to uninstall that program. Relying on QT is probably not a good idea under windows 2k...

The new player works just fine for me in Mac OS 10.4.11 and Firefox 2.0.0.14. It would be better to add a progress slider, so I could easily go back if I miss a bit.
I've used archive.org for Travus T. Hipp (
http://www.archive.org/details/tth_080604) only. Now that I've read some of the other comments, I'll have to explore what else is available here.
I tried embedding the old player on my Web site, but it locks into the day when I did so. Ditto with the new player, plus it fails to show the control bar, just the two content bars. I'll have to work out the code to specify the current day.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Going with Flash Player was a great idea. Many of us have large 24 inch LCD monitors which makes it perfect for streaming content. This is not a critique of the new player, but the quality of the encodes are not very good, and should be reencoded from the original source. Otherwise you have a winner.
For those having trouble streaming, you will need to install the Flash Player plugin for your browser. Some browsers will install it automatically but others might require a manual install.
I checked to see if I could embed a movie on my web site,
www.dvdhounds.com but I see that it's not ready for embedding yet.
For those posting links to selling products such as Nike, shame on you.

I acyually hate the new player very much. It does not always work and one thing it always does do is to completely stop working when you try to switch from one song to another. For instance if you hit the fast forwrd button or just try to skip to a new song after one song has started. From that point on I cannot get either player to work!

Great player! Love the fullscreen mode.
One suggestion: can you lighten the line that shows how much you've downloaded? It's really hard to see it.

Please, please, you know what is awesome?
ability to scroll through the vid without it being downloaded yet in order to be able to browse it fast since I love skipping long meaningless intros...
I'm sure you see what I'm talking about.
Website is awesome, stopped following it a year ago, back here, and the new player is still cool anyway.
Thanx so much for this place

I used the embed code on my website and it's beautiful. However, it plays automatically and I would like it to start paused. Let the page viewer decide when/if to start the video. Thanks for the good work.

It would be nice to make the "download progress bar" a lighter color so it can be more easily distinguished from the default black background. It is hard to determine how much of the song has been downloaded to the flash player.
Thanks!

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
I'm using a macbook pro; firefox - works great. I embedded into my blog - and it is EASIER than the other realflow player, as I don't have to tweak any settings.
One parameter I would like is the option to set "automatic play" so the viewer can click on the file if they wish to download and play it. Right now, it plays automatically.
Otherwise - looks slick, and works great.

Excellent player - only used for music so far, but a great improvement on the old player. Especially like the readout for the track timing - that's the way it should be done!

Two things:
1. It looks way better
2. I don't know if you're using some other default mp3 compression rate with it or not but my trax sound definitely better on the new player. The highs are no longer muffled.
So in short:
Sounds good, looks good.
Thanks,

Hello,
Does the new player have a different equalization than the old one? I have the impression there are more high frequencies.

It looked very stylish but I noticed that it produces a lag on videos with the sound and it sounds like lower quality sound also with the new player. Obviously since the player is bigger your going to have a bit more pixelated vidoes as well.

I like your new player. Due to res in the saving of space some movies are really blurred in full screen. The option of resizing the full screen to anything in between full and minimum screen for max effect would be a plus also such as 1/2 screen. Jest a thought. I have this option with most of my personal players to see it a large as I can and still make out the characters in the film. As someone stated before me, an equalizer also would be nice. Asking too much...maybe, maybe not.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Looks great!
Two things I noticed: when you have multiple Flash Video conversions to choose from (e.g.
http://www.archive.org/details.php?identifier=vivaldi_rock&newflash=1) then the ">" indicating which version is being played remains in the top position (first video) even when another one is being played... (Firefox 2, OS X 10.3.9)
Also the progress bar seems missing.
Full screen looks quite good, now only if there was a way to optimise uninterrupted playback for higher encoded Flash Videos...? But it's hard to tell from here where the bottleneck is, it could also well be my rather slow wireless internet connection...
Maybe a "double size" mode would also be good to have at some point for videos that don't look too good in full-screen mode...?
All in all this looks very good!

I did like the old color better. I think the black contrasts too much, but that's just me.
Great job!

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
The new player is much better than the old. For music anyway, haven't tried video yet nor have I tried to embed it on any pages. But I primarily use the player for music anyway, and for that it's great. I can pause songs in the middle of playback and restart in the same place unlike the old player which would jump to the next song. I also didn't notice any gaps in between songs unlike the old player which would pause the playback for approximately three seconds between each track. And I can now use the thumb or whatever you call it to scroll to any section of a song I please. Very very nice, good job and thanks. Your efforts are appreciated.

great to have a progress slider!
nosy graphic designer comments: the player looks nice, but it clashes visually with the rest of the Archive design. have you tried replacing the black background with the grey of the field it's on top of? the white dot sliders stand out strongly as being the brightest thing in the entire player - tone them down?
I agree that the sliders are hard to see
listening to
http://www.archive.org/details/abird2007-11-03.flac16 in firefox on xp, the total song length listed in red by the slider is very unreliable: it takes a while for it to figure out the correct length, and gets confused when you click around from track to track, picking a number seemingly at random
and the orange arrow stops following the current track once I

Don't know what happened there - that should have been "once click on a different track." I had thought that the arrow only followed the current track for me when the track was advanced naturally. Now I see it works with pushing the > buttons... just not when I click on a track

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Hello Dear Archive!
Here a few notes to the new beta player:
- The mouse cursor shouldn't remain a text-input cursor when hovering over the rows with media, instead the normal pointer should be used so it's more clear you can actually click them (people will probably somewhen try anyway but it was irritating at first)
- It is _very_ hard to make out that there are in fact 2 sliders, one of which is the volume and the other the seek. Yes there are icons next to at least volume, but without a lightened up background or some other change which emphasizes it it's very hard to see. The first moment, I thought the knob of the seek slider is the stop button haha.
- It's not obvious at all where you can stop or pause playback. I've noticed that the play button change to pause, but it seems to have a bug since it changed to pause _after_ i paused, not after i started playback.
Thanks for constantly improving archive.org!
Regards,
Milosz

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
The new video player has a better look -- not so sure about better functionality. For instance, you should make the embed code manual start by default, not autostart. You can always include an instructional note informing the user how to make the player autostart.
As to XSPF, it is by far a superior audio player *if* the code-writer follows the mime type prescriptions and so on which xiph.org provides. Correctly written XSPF scripts *can* provide lossless audio.
I have stated elsewhere on the forums, and repeat here, why don't you make the item description field freer for player experimentation, by removing the HTML restrictions? Allow folks free reign with HTML, Javascript, php, etc., and let's come up with some proof-of-concept lossless players, shall we?

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
With a lot of use now (mostly in Firefox 2 on XP, and recently rockin' Firefox 3), I keep finding these bugs:
-In audio items, sometimes there are extra "tracks" listed that, when clicked, freeze the player or even browser for a while. These often have a blank space where the time should be. Here is a random item with one of those as the second track:
http://www.archive.org/details/PcGamingPodcast5WereBack-In either audio or video items, if you play something for a bit then try to drag the circle back to the beginning, it won't go to t= 0. Instead, it goes "nearly" there. The only way to hear from t0 again is to refresh the page.
-The .swf files rarely look correct, typically giving weirdly offset partial views with a blackened look.
Besides these 3 main issues, I like it a lot, especially the forward seeking in audio. Thanks Tracey!

I tried it at
http://www.archive.org/details.php?identifier=gd1993-06-25.fm-monitor.koucky.91249.flac16&newflash=1
and found that it was (seemed) louder than the other player. More importantly perhaps, there were no lags in playback UNTIL I switch to a different tab to post this. Placed the audio on hold, unfortunately. Because of the no lags, thumbs up!
Using FF 2.0.0.14 on XP.

I would love to see support for options to increase the playback speed of the player - possibly this firm would be open to working with the Archive to provide the add-in at a low or no cost - that is if it works with this form of Flash player I believe this is actually in the functionality of the Windows Media Player (increase/decrease speed without affecting voice pitch).
http://www.enounce.com/Also I would suggest support for Captioning - this is important for ADA compliance and other usability reasons.
See here for excellent examples including Flash players.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
This player has new and improved features from the old for sure.
However, the one thing that bothered me about the old one is between songs, there is a gap in audio. normally this wouldnt be a problem, but,
I use this site to listen to alot of GD. When they play one song into another (2nd sets) that gap just kills the flow!
I didnt like it with the old player and thought it might be different with the new one. is this just an oversight or is it on purpose?
Or is it just me? anyone else?

Mac OS 10.5.3 on Intel iMac. For awhile, the new player was working fine in the latest AND Beta version of Firefox, but now in both versions only the FINAL sound file in the list appears.
You probably know it doesn't work in the latest version of Safari. Can't even see an option to select to use it.

For the new acquisition, "Conquest" , The words do not match the mouth movement. Can you fix this? I'd love to see it but I can't stand the delay.
And why is the new player larger and clearer in the new movie "Conquest"?
Is this larger format what is to be expected from now on?
The new player is great for the size but the clarity becomes to digital looking.
Thanks

i know xspf mp3 player is not the best looking in the world.
however, it did work, often.
Adobe has been going through growing pains lately and having trouble with getting Flash to work with Win/Mac and Linux especially.
If it ain't broke, don't "fix" it. Please?

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
I have Windows XP on a Dell Laptop using a wireless internet express card on a major cell phone network. I have all the players installed including some internet TV software bundle that I was suckered into paying for with a $20.00 charge on my credit card. So far your system is the only one that even works without major buffer and stuttering issues, including the one I was charged for. I've watched 3 or 4 feature length films on your player without so much as a hiccup and that is full screen. I use it mostly for movies and documentaries. The service I payed for works sometimes on low resolution with a very small screen and I get to choose basically from about 10 movies that they post apparently at random. Their service is peppered with hundreds of dead or useless links.

People with windows xp who are experiencing problems with streaming media need to turn off that stupid system restore program. It eats up resources and will cause streaming media to "stutter" or even stop dead.
System Restore is worthless anyway.

I turned off System Restore and behold it did the trick. There is a site called hulu.com that has more recent color movies like 70's, 80's, and 90's that I couldn't use at all because of the total lockup like you described. Thanks a bunch. How in the world did you figure that one out? Must be some kinda computer guru. Anyway, Thanks again.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
Hi! Beta player wouldn't play for me, although original player trouble-free. Nothing happens when I hit "play" button except it toggles back and forth between "pause" and "play."
I find it less convenient to have to move a cursor to select which tune I want to hear. Prefer just to poin and click to hear an individual song.
System: Windows 2K Professional on a Verizon Fios connection. IE.

Re: Audio player
Hmmm...after relogging into LMA page, new player is present and working. Not bad! Scrub feature much appreciated, and discovered that I can click right on the individual song and listen.
OK, I'm a convert.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
while the songs are loading, there is something calculating the total song length(because i see the red number get bigger) but then the total song length is also on the far right. this is a redundancy and also you can cut out the lines of code that calculate the song length.
i probably didnt explain it well so hit me up at jerry.quickbeam.garcia@gmail.com
GREAT SITE

I like it. I wasn't sure about the reason for it at first, but then today I noticed the seekability. That is a major plus for me. Thanks for all the hard work!

I definitely like it. Works well, and has a nice look. The only complaint I have is that the interface is kind of hard to see. Could be bigger numbers, etc.

While the new player looks alot better from a video perspective, my particular video file's audio playback is much less accurate in the new player than in the old. Alot of the high frequencies get lost, causing the singers to sound like they're "underwater."

I love the new player; I've only used it for listening to music--I find it much more visually appealing and more user friendly.
I am having a problem embedding it on my website. I didn't have any problems with the old player.
I use a WYSIWYG online site builder, so if anybody asks me any technical questions it'll most likely over my head. Anybody help?

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
I'm using Windows Vista on Dell Inspiron 6400 with latest Adobe Flash player. New beta player works o.k. Biggest advantage is option for full screen. However, picture quality is not as good as other streaming sites I visit. Very pixelated in full screen mode, especially when there is rapid movement. Just watched the Memphis Belle movie from the US War Dept. and some scenes were almost unwatchable in full screen. However, I am going to stick with it - thanks for all the work you do.

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
yes tracey W.M., the player is more intoxicating than a six pack at the movies. the whole spectrum of black to gray to white appears in its full splendour. clear and cool to the eye. The stream is smooth in action (no blur.), the sound is crisp (I use a Mac ig5 and it projects.) So, how can I import it to the rest of my applications? It's Cool.

nice,
except:
no volume control?
and when you pause and move the slider bar it starts playing but the play button stays on "play" (doesn't change to "pause")

I like this new player. The images seem sharper and it doesn't have that annoying menu bar inside the picture.

I'm guessing you could save the archive (and users) a lot of bandwidth by setting the default embed code settings for "autostart" and "autocache" to "false" instead of "true"

Re: New movie and audio (flash) player in beta -- please comment |
The player works on my system now that I have a 1 gig processor. The problem I'm having now is there is a memory leak! This happens in IE6 and Firefox. Even when I use the alternative stream in my own player...this is very odd and I don't remember it ever happening with the Flash player. I'm sorry I'll miss the content on archive until I figure this out...
