bob's "woodie" |
I know many folks will have "creative" responses to the subject line. have at it. I need a good laugh. My question is.....what did you guys think of his acoustic guitar being used around 94? Jer's acoustic sound takes a lot of heat(I agree) but I never hear anyone comment on Bob's acoustic contributions on Looks Like rain, Eternity, ect. Personally, I never liked it.

could you list a show where he used the acoustic. I've gone through a bit of '94, but don't remember much.

7-2-94 Desolation and Eternity are acoustic
9-17-94 Eternity and Don't ease me in are as well.
I was at both so they jump right out. Any of the first set cowboy combos will also have him on acoustic. Take 7-21-94 for example. if you look at the setlist there are asterisks on Me and My uncle>mexicali. I think that's a notation for Bob on acoustic. can't say when he broke it out but summer 94 through the end it was pretty regular that he'd use it at least once a show.
Also try 2-26-95. Dog shi* show but the notations in the set list indicate Weir on acoustic and a dobo type thing for many songs.

I listened to 9/17 ...
hmmmmm. not sure. I think a full acoustic sound might have worked well, but he seems to be playing up on the neck, and that doesn't add all that much imo. not ready to give it the thumbs down though - I'll listen to some more.

I have nothing constructive to add to your question, but I must say this:
That could possibly one of the most disturbing Subject titles in recent memory. I was fully expecting another heated discussion of the Richard Simmons' 1976-era gym shorts. This is one of those times I've been very happy to have been wrong.

Its curious that Bob broke the acoustic out in 94. I recall an interview (but can't provide a citation) where Jerry states its basically Bob that stood in the way of the Dead doing more acoustic sets, he wasn't really comfortable with the idea or the sound or something.
Also curious that mention of a woody gets SDH poking his head out on a Sunday afternoon.

My opinion: when playing electric keep with an electric. It really adds nothing unless it's an additional player filling on top of the electric sound.

I'm with you. If they decided to do acoustic sets I would have been on board but I think Bob's acoustic during this time didn't add anything to the mix, even on the cowboy tunes.
