STREAMING shows |
Hey friends! Does anyone know how [or where] to get copies of Dead shows which are STREAMING ONLY on archive.org? I don't want to do anything illegal, but boardtapes have been traded for decades with the band's blessing! Someone from info@archive.org suggested I ask in this forum. I'm not computer savy. I'm using Mac OS 10.4.10. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

you have many options first is the various mp3 sites if you just plan on playing shows and not trade shows,other members can give you links to the multiple mp3 sites around.second is via bit torrent just google grateful dead torrents,these are lossless files in shn/flac format and the prefer method in the trading circles.third is snail mail which is still a great way to get shows.contact traders at etree.
http://db.etree.org/bs_d.php?artist_key=2 that's a link to all dead shows in circulation that are tradeable,click on year,click on a date,click on show owners,click on a couple of owners which will bring up the owners list,click on contact which will bring the owners email.send email about the show you wish to get and set up a blank and postage deal.happy hunting,the shows here are for everyone to listen and enjoy and most respect the wishes of the band to keep it like that.with just a little leg work you'll be smothered in gd music.so enjoy the streaming and don't risk having all the shows pulled for downloading crappy low bit rate qaulity of shows hosted here.hope that helps.

Thanks to all for the info! I will keep looking for additional responses. It was so much easier 20 years ago, in college, when people just traded tapes... but tapes had their problems, too... and it is WONDERFUL to be able to find so many high quality shows on the internet.

If you have broadband access NOT through an institutional network (like a university) then bittorrents are by far the best way to fully plumb the GD universe. There's a shortish learning curve, but it's worth it. The sites listed by Arbuthnot are the way to go, particularly the second, which is a little internet miracle. Most bittorrent sites have links to one or more tutorials on the use of bittorrents.
Also, there's a site called
www.gdlive.com that at the moment is down but may come back (perhaps even soon). They host a lot of shows that can simply be downloaded.

....By the way, thanks for asking in such a nice way, it's a refreshing change from the last guy who tried to bully his way around the issue. My compliments. I don't have much to add, but there's plenty of MP3 sites where you can get immediate downloads, if you don't mind the relatively low bit rate. Welcome to the forum.

There have been several ----s who have asked how to download from the archive, which is a deadly sin around here. For all of them: see what happens when you ask nice? If you can get a slot, speedingarrow is an mp3 site with mounds of material, and if gdlive comes back on line, it's also a great source.
The biggest problem is whether to dl this or that version of a concert. Charlie Miller's work seems to be the the standard.

speeding arrow has a very complete mp3 archive and doesn't post commercially released shows.
