Forum: etree Subject: What happened to downloading a full show in Flac Format?

I have been away for sometime and I have come back to realize that I can only download a complete show in MP3 format. What happened? Why can I not download a full show in lossless format/Flac format? Can I only download a show one song at a time in Flac format? If yes, then I am extremely pissed off. Can someone please tell me how I can download a full show in Flac format instead of song at a time?

While I am here then I wanted to let all of you that like reggae to check Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad. I was just introduced to them and they rock. Thanks again for all your responses! Greatly appreciated!

Myself and my lossless Kimock archive have been finding great joy using 'FileZilla'. Google-ing the term should get you off on the right track.

Happy downloading.

You can also just drag and drop from through FTP.

I too recommend the 'down them all' firefox extension. if you don't want to use firefox, you can still download all the tracks without thinking using FTP.

The 'whole show' zips were stopped for lossless because of the enormous file size of each of them was becoming too much of a space hog for the servers.

From the FAQ:

What are the options for downloading a full recording?

Update 5/2006: Please note that due to a major system transition, many items' ZIP files (for their "Lossless" links) have been deliberately disabled for the time being. Engineers are still working on the best method for the new system.

Lossless: A ZIP file containing Shorten files or Flac files. Unlike formats like MP3, lossless formats are true to the original - there is no degradation in quality.

Hi-Fi: A ZIP file containing MP3 files encoded with a variable bit rate to deliver high quality at roughly 160kilobits per second.

Lo-Fi: A ZIP file containing MP3 files encoded at a constant bit rate of 64 kilobits per second. These files are ideal for users with slower Internet connections.

FTP: Using an FTP client you can log in to the Archive's servers and download all of the files at once.

Other Web Options: All files are displayed as individual links on any item's details page. Web-based download managers can be set up to download all the files you want from the page, as a group. For Firefox, the extension DownThemAll is a popular option.

Just my opinion, but downloading one at a time by hitting the link works out fine for me. I have an old pc that doesn't multi-task very well so I just download a song or 3 when I have time, saving them to a folder on my desktop so they are easy to check what is there when I want to resume the next time I have time.

I really appreciate all the free music no matter what hoops I may have to jump through, but it's nice to have the pc available instead of tied up for 2-3-4 hours while it downloads. I'm just saying...

had to do with server transfers if you must know

Sorry sensitive guy. Free music=Great! MP3=Crap I am sure I am not the only person who feels this way about MP3. It actually does not make sense to me that you can download each song in FLAC format, but you cannot download the full file in FlAC format. I am guessing it is taking up the same amount of space, but let me know if I am wrong. Can't you also compress the Flac files into a zip file? Anyway, I was hoping to hear that I was missing something so I guess I will just how to download a few at a time. Thanks for all the replies

Yes that's exactly it. A Flac show will run over a GB. To then zip it requires another GB of space. It would double all the server space needed at the archive. Since there are tools for downloading multiple tracks, there is no reason to waste all that space.

Mr Dent - Glad to know ya.

Download Mozilla Firefox web browser. Next, download "Down Them All" feature for Firefox.

Right click on desired links(plural) and choose "Down them all".

Pissed-offness, over.

Good day.;)

P.S. - Be sure to limit the # of tracks to 2 or 3 at a time. They will dl consecutively(Good), in small groups, instead of simultaneously(bad), in one fat squeeze, which, apparently, gums-up the works(technical jargon).
