The Northwestern University Archives, established in 1935, holds material relating to every aspect of Northwestern's history, including non-current official University records, papers of faculty members, and records of student organizations-- as well as publications, photographs, audio-visuals, artifacts, and more. The Archives' holdings are non-circulating, and are open to the public for research and reference.

The Transportation Library of Northwestern University contains over 500,000 items, and is one of the largest transportation information centers in the world, encompassing information on all transportation modalities, including: air, rail, highway, pipeline, water, urban transport and logistics. It includes a significant collection on law enforcement, police management and traffic enforcement.

Digitized materials from Northwestern University Library currently hosted by the Internet Archive include Evanston City Directories, c.1879-1923, various transportation-related documents created by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), and other institutions, as well as the Purple Parrot, 1921-1950 and 1974-75. The Purple Parrot was humor publication created by students at Northwestern University.
