Listen and enjoy
Every era of the Dead has its pluses and minuses but for me, the early 80's are my formative years and this recording captures what first drew me to want to see this band play live. From the opening notes of Alabama there is great energy in their relaxed, yet very tight and upbeat playing. Add to that the almost incomparable venue they are playing in and you have all the makings for a very special performance. They didn't disappoint.
Theres too much bass in the mix but I used an EQ to fix that and it sounded much better. It is a pretty decent audience but it still doesn't quite capture the full beauty of the Uptown's stellar acoustics. Similar, but much bigger and cooler than the Warfield, the Uptown deserves more fame in the Dead's storied history book.
Listen and enjoy

My favourite 'ship of fools'. Did the Sunflower Men play support that day?http://archive.org/details/TheBalladOfOrsonWells

Complete Show = Complete Life!
Mr. Black Peter says it all. I have been trading tapes for over 15 years and still prefer them to CD, so I was unaware of this archive until right before the cruel Thanksgiving last year. Ever since, I have gradually tried to complete shows by using this site and today I found this gem. I have a soundboard recording of part of sets I & II, including the awesome "Shakedown>Samson" and the monster "Other One" which I got from a Dead Hour long ago. However, I missed the "Ship" (pun intended), "He's Gone" cuts in at the very end, and I don't have anything after the drums including (gasp) this wonderful "Black Peter". Thanks to the archive and this very good audience recording, one of my favorite early Brent era shows is now complete and, perhaps, I can finally stop collecting for a while and just listen to the music play!

Mr. Black Peter
This is a very good, just a small step down from excellant, audience recording. Since Bobby pulled the SBD plug, I've had to get used to these audience recordings all over again (senior membership here guys, I hail from the tape trading days) but this is a good one. And that's a good thing because this is a solid show well worth the download. This is a show that let you know, as a participant, that one that night you witnessed a degree of artistry and musianship not normally seen in the world of stage entertainment. The loose jams of this show are inventive and unrushed. The detail paid to the performance of each song is exhibited in a distince way in Black Peter which has got to be one of the best Black Peters ever played in not just for the fact that the dynamics of the song are so meticously positioned between the band members. At one point you could here a pin drop when Jerry "goes beneath the ground" and this is so well sustained until the crescendo that you get the feeling that sheer talent and muschianship were defined in ways most artists could never duplicate. And of course, each piece of the tapestry combined to make a balanced whole. A good show to have.

Very Good Aud Recording
A smokin' Other One for sure, and the Jam out of it is pretty hot stuff, too. Wow - not bad at all for 1979, and a 7 out of 10 for the audience recording. Garcia is in excellent form this night, and Brent's keyboards really stand out. I always like the direct audience sound on these recordings, so I'm a little biased. Definitely worth checking out.

Ship of Fools and Jam out of The Other One
Great "Ship of Fools," incredible solo (twice normal length). The jam out of "The Other One" is very heavy. Generally a high-energy, solid show and excellent audience recording.
