smoke visible from nearby freeways. good evening. thanks for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. >> i'm ken wayne and i'm noelle bellow. authorities first reported this fire around 8 o'clock this evening near 27th and west streets. they just confirmed 10 minutes ago. the situation is under control. the oakland fire department posted this video from the scene earlier tonight. those flames erupted at single-family home and a church. >> the home is now considered a total loss. the church suffered some significant damage, as you can see here. both buildings were empty at the time of the fire. so no one was hurt. the cause is under investigation. >> investigation is underway in san jose after a city contractor was found dead at san jose's animal care center this morning, san jose police say jose fire and cal osha are all looking into exactly what happened. the animal care center was closed all day today, but plans to reopen for normal activities tomorrow. the only thing they say is that pets were not involved in this incident.

>> more protests in the bay area today over the ongoing war in the middle east. this group of demonstrators gathered input portola valley earlier today where president biden was attending a fundraiser at the home of billionaire venture capitalist vinod khosla. we want him to know that we do not support the genocide is happening right now and we want the donors to know that we hope that they would fund other things besides a war and the site's genocide. >> and so we're here today to just make sure he knows that people are unhappy about this genocide in palestine. >> the president then left for palo alto to visit the home of former yahoo. ceo marissa mayer. he is now in seattle. >> student protest against israel's war on gaza are also continuing tonight throughout the bay area from stanford to uc berkeley. students sit in protest of now reached san jose state's campus students. there have a list of demands they want the university to

abide by that. they say the school has not budged. kron four's jack moment has more. so students here at san jose state are going on day number 2 of the campus sit in support of people in gaza. >> now, as you can see, the san jose state university administration has already given to students warning about the policy regarding camping on >> some engaging in prayer and others sitting to show support as students protest the ongoing war between israel and hamas. e responsibility of the terrible genocide that is occurring in palestine and in the gaza. >> right now is a responsibility that falls on. >> all of our shoulder today marks day 2 of the sit-in at san jose state. students say this banner is the only communication the school has sent. that basically says that gatherings of any kind that are >> not approved will be met

with a request to disperse. students have 6 demands for the school, including disclosing and divesting from any companies that benefit israel. >> we do not abstain ourselves from this. harmful to our community's well-being. they're also getting support from neighbors. and it's a great injustice to the palestinian people. nancy so says she lives in the area and wanted to show up for student protesters around the nation who are met with suspensions and even arrests. >> so we should support we got is because we don't have expulsion of all kind for but they do. >> students were on campus until late friday night and plan to protest all throughout next week. the university administration sent kron 4 statement saying in part we expect and anticipate that our students who participate in demonstrations will be peaceful and responsible and they're following the university's time place and manner policy. >> so students here at san jose state to me, they really

are under no specific timeline as when they want to end the sit-in protest. meantime, the last of classes is on may 13th with graduation ceremonies happening over the next several weeks. for now, we're in san jose. jackie moment. kron 4 news. >> uc berkeley's law school graduation was held today while a pro-palestine encampment remains on the campus at sproul plaza commencement took place at the greek amphitheater. the event comes as many colleges are having to cancel graduation ceremonies across the country because of the pro-palestinian protests. cal's main graduation is at memorial stadium tomorrow. >> well, very warm weather even hotter around parts of bay area. today, temperatures soaring into the low 90's today inland. well, we saw some changes out along the coastline. i think we're going to see more of that as we head toward tomorrow morning. let's check out your wake-up weather forecast as we get you going on the weekend tomorrow morning. how about this? we start out with some partly cloudy skies. couple patches of fog creeping along the coastline. some of that inside the bay. the temperatures

starting out in the 50's at 06:00am. if you're up that early 08:00am partly cloudy. you've got some of that fog. this start to push back toward the coastline 50's and some 60's by 10. yeah. becoming mostly sunny. those temperatures still going to warm up in a hurry in many parts of the bay and the valleys along the coastline, a different kind of weather kind of settling in. we're going to see much cooler temperatures on the way along the coast looking outside right now in the distance there you can see some patchy fog that has crept along the coastline right now, while most of the bay is looking clear by tomorrow afternoon here in the upper 80's, maybe some low 90's. well inland, all the coastline, much cooler, maybe 30 degrees cooler out toward the beaches. >> thank you, lawrence. after more than a year without a top cop, oakland will officially welcome floyd mitchell into the role of police chief tomorrow. once he's sworn in, mitchell will be opd 14th chief in the last decade. he says, although he's an outsider, he already feels at home and looks forward to getting to work.

>> person of interest is in custody in connection to a double homicide in san lorenzo. according to cials, a murder investigation began on may 4th after the family, members of 2 women began to worry about them. neither woman had responded to phone calls or texts since april 30th. the women both in their 30's, lived in the same home on dermani avenue. deputies conducted a welfare check where they say they found a woman dead inside the home. the investigation revealed the crime happened on may. 1st. officials are not yet not yet releasing information on the victims or the person of interest arrested. >> closing arguments have wrapped up in the attempted murder case of the man accused of intentionally driving his car off a 300 foot cliff with his family inside the unique case hinges on the judge's decision of what kind of mental health crisis dharmesh patel was happening suffering from when he drove off highway one in january of last year. his wife and his 2 kids were in the car when it plunged over double slide in san mateo

county. they all survived to tell wife says she does not want her husband prosecute it. the judge could decide to divert to tell us case out of criminal court and into a mental health treatment program. instead, the judge says she will make her ruling on june. 20th. emergency crews rescued a climber from a cliff in marin county. here's the video. authorities arrived after receiving calls reporting a person. >> hanging from a cliff at tomorrow's point. deputies or their tactical fight officer to the cliff's edge where they place a victim into a rescue harness. the man was taken to a safe location. >> well, as we reported yesterday, the decision to change the name of oakland's airport to san francisco bay oakland international airport is now a done deal. but you might not get too attached to that name. a lawsuit is pending and as kron four's, dan kerman tells u.s., legal experts say the ruling will go against oakland. >> those arriving at oakland airport friday may not have realized it ak has a new name

san francisco bay, oakland international airport. that follows final approval thursday by oakland, port commissioners. but legal experts predict the name change won't last because of the trademark lawsuit. san francisco has filed. i think san francisco is in a pretty strong legal position. uc san francisco law professor jeffrey left stunned, focuses on intellectual property trademarks, patents and copyrights. one of though, really worst points for oakland is that they seem to have been doing this in a conscious attempt to divert traffic away. >> sfo and in trademark case is the fact that the defendant is intentionally seeking to capitalize on the goodwill of the trademark holder is often very important factor in trademark lawsuits. the port of oakland hopes the name change will attract more travelers. >> i don't think it is going to become few different. fact, i don't believe any difference to people coming in to well, the name san francisco does carry some cash. a san

second son, julian, she ended up having him prematurely little does she know this was going to change her personal and professional life for ever. >> i found myself in the most wonderful time of my life. and the social worker and everyone was supporting me at the hospital, then realized i could benefit from having a service called field home visiting program where the nurse comes directly to your home. it's voluntary program. and with that guidance, i was able to feel. >> support the support she received came from a free program from others through the san francisco department of public health. she says the experience helped her navigate having a preemie and gave her the skills she would later use. >> we're learning different modalities like how can i keep him healthy and then still make sure that i was to keep myself healthy. and i was also in grieving stay. i had lost my mom that year. so it was a lot on my plate. but i did

know that with a nurse coming to the home in my sacred space, my humble home that i felt supported. >> jenny, so inspired by the experience later became a public health nurse herself and didn't forget the program that poured into her. >> actually, the first job that i was hired for was with maternal child adolescent health, the same home visiting program that serves me in my most vulnerable time. so for me, it was such a gift and that little boy who was once a preemie in her lap. >> while she studied to become a nurse is now. 22 and just finished his first semester in nursing school. so i think definitely being in her footsteps is something that i a. >> that's something and take pride in for sure. and i know that she, you know, loves and is something that we just kind of cherish. it's a special bond for us for sure. >> in san francisco, let's look at in kron 4 news. >> well, it was a hot day all across the bay area. people

meteorologist lawrence karnow is here. >> lauren says she can be screaming this weekend to well, you know what? i shield the love of it, you know, probably screaming. a lot of people screaming about last weekend's weather. all that rain, the cold temperatures. then finally we're breaking out in the summer like pattern around the bay area and looking good. we've got mostly clear skies out there right now. we do have some patchy fog that has moved along the coastline. so looks like the weather pattern shaping up to be very nice. very summer-like for the weekend. ahead. temperatures cool along the coastline. now you've got some patchy fog. a 55 still 69 in san jose. how about 72? what a beautiful evening right now in concord, 70 in vacaville, 66 and snowmen, 60 degrees in santa rosa. really some nice weather all around the bay area. and that fog. well, we're going to see more of that onlthe way. we had a subtly surge of fall kick in late in the day and we'll see more of that as we head toward tomorrow morning. i think that because the filling along the coastline and probably inside the bay tomorrow morning when you wake up that onshore wind has kicked back. instead that offshore flow, the blue, the fog away. so things are

changing the atmosphere. still going to be a great weekend. high pressure overhead. no threat of any rain. but yeah, we'll start to cool things down right along the immediate coastline. first is kind of a thin marine layer. so cooler temperatures out toward the beaches and just inside the bay still got to stay warm to hot in many places inland talking upper 80's in the south bay, maybe some low 90's. the warmest spots. yeah. still some sizzling temperatures out there in areas. but overnight tonight that patchy fog that they're going to stretch inside the bay early tomorrow morning. then as we head throughout the day, that feels right away back toward the coastline. only the surge stronger on shore by tomorrow afternoon. and i think even more fog as we head in toward mother's day. all that being said tomorrow is going to be a nice day, but cooler in spots about 62 degrees into the 70's like downtown san francisco today. you're going to see that sunshine all day long in oakland, about 80 degrees about 87, a very warm in san jose. thank you, lawrence. bart trains will be shutdown this weekend between union city and the south fremont's stations. >> bart says crews will be

working on the tracks between those stations. buses will take the place of the trains. hart says the trains will be back up and running by monday. >> fire crews responded to a fire at a senior housing complex in san francisco today. this is video from the citizen app. sf fire says there are 51 units and that 4 story building located on japan town in of arc's me look at it in japantown on fillmore street. more than 100 people live there. several residents were evacuated and had to be evaluated by medical personnel. 2 people were taken to the hospital. santa rosa man celebrated a milestone birthday today. bab al miller turned 107 years old while his fellow residents at brookdale senior living center in santa rosa had a celebration for him. >> kron four's rob nesbit was there. happy birthday, bob. there's been a lot of milestone. birthdays celebrated at the brookdale shunning senior living center in santa rosa. >> but friday was the first time a resident celebrated their 100th trip around the sun. it's why health and

wellness director heidi gallagher wanted to do something special for bob on miller. >> he's kind of quiet. but when you engage him, he's has a really wicked personality. he's very sweet. and we really enjoy having him here in our community. all miller wasn't exactly thrilled about the attention, ok, answering a few questions for the news or to get the attention of the now. but he did let his grandson, alex, all miller twig sing his praises. i think for me it's more how we chose to live his life with and his family and the people around him. the 107 year-old was a staff sergeant in the army during world war 2. he was stationed in europe and even fought in the battle of the bulge. a little chapter of u.s. history. refreshing to speak with somebody who >> literally live in era that is is gone and that he can still speak to that and explain what day to you. joined by his family friends, fellow residents and a service member of the army to

>> big loss for the broadcast journalism community today, los angeles entertainment news anchor sam rubin has died. he was a staple at our sister station ktla. sam joined the ktla morning news in 1991 and was vital to making it the success. but it is today. sam is a multi award winner and legend in the entertainment community hosting countless red carpets, beloved by co-workers and celebrities alike. many of those celebrities offering their condolences and they're shocked today. he's at his passing. sam was just 64 years old. he died suddenly this morning in los angeles. his work spanned the world. he was also a contributor for uk and australian news programs. but he loved his role as a husband and dad the most. he was always bragging about his kids and their accomplishments. our hearts are with his wife, leslie and his 4 we both have

worked with sam in the past. i got my start in turning for sam in the ktla entertainment news department back in 2010, he was just an incredible influence and presence in my life and career continuously supportive every year. always, you know, sending a nice message, that sort of thing. he kept us on our toes as well. he forced us to get on air. i was trying to match make a lawsuit which uncomfortable and that, you know, shenanigans are constant there. but >> that's, you know, really where he shined, i think was he took something small and really kind of made it something to just what an incredible man and incredible i remember in the morning news started their 91. i was there and he came in and all the celebrities were so deferential to him. and i was like. >> who is this guy? i mean, because celebrities expect you to try to fun over them. they

address abuse and harassment and san francisco's political sector. more than a dozen people stepped up to the microphone last week in a special meeting organized by the san francisco democratic party force grant lotus here in the studio with more grant and try to root this out and rightfully so comes after recent allegations against prominent figures in local politics, survivors of harassment shared their experiences with party leaders. we spoke with nancy care of the san francisco democratic party who says this is long overdue. >> the party that time did not but this is something that i was very supportive of. what s wpc first came to us and given some of the recent events in the process. i felt like this was the time to act. not now, then when. >> and this comes as fewer young people are getting into politics. according to tang, she says that is because many of them just don't feel safe. the organization hopes to

draft a code of conduct that members of the democratic party and affiliated groups must abide by tongue tells us this hearing is the first of many sessions to come. but the first was a success. >> i i was i was overwhelmed by it. it was really something that we strove to do was to get very survivor said trick. we had a a assault therapist on hand. we had marsy's law expert. >> and san francisco representative nancy pelosi is also throwing her support behind the committee, sending a letter addressed to tongue. pelosi is urging the committee to implement a robust standard of independents, thoroughness and due process. has the effort moves forward? >> it's the parties duty to address so that we could make sure that we have the safe environments that are free from harassment, free from violence that people can

exercise the right to be a part of the political discourse and that we continue to grow a generation of leadership of the democratic party. >> meanwhile, san francisco city leaders held their own hearing last night to examine how officials have actually handled some of these cases nearly 5 years ago. san francisco founded the office of harassment and assault response and prevention team or sharp as they call it supervisor. hillary ronen said she will require that the committee report regularly on its efforts moving forward and work to enhance confidentiality efforts to better protect survivors who do come forward. noel can't back to you. grant. thank you. >> new at 10 more than 2000 pot plants and 100 pounds of processed marijuana. we're sees today at the santa clara county property near the san benito county line. the santa clara county sheriffs covert investigations unit says they've been focused on this illegal cultivation operation

for months. 4 people were arrested and 2 pistols were also recovered. >> 4 people were arrested accused of trying to smuggle illegal drugs into the maguire correctional facility. that's the jail in redwood city. the sheriff's office says it found meth in an inmate's possession as he was being rebooked. this was back in late april. investigators later learned 3 people not in custody were involved in the crime. the inmates and the 3 other suspects now face a number of charges, including suspicion of possession of meth for sale. >> and illegal bird fighting ring and more than $20,000 in stolen property have been recovered from a santa rosa home back in march. police say they responded to a report of a burglary at a storage facility. officers arrested a dream. nick peters on one count of grand theft for the crime. detectives then searched her home and they found 1000 game birds who they believe were being raised to fight sonoma county animal services helped remove those birds as well as 5

malnourished horses and 2 dogs from the property officials arrested 2 other men for having bird fighting weapons and being involved in the storage theft. >> stargazers are getting ready for a big treat. parts of california could get a glimpse of the northern lights. this weekend. it's thanks to heightened solar activity. experts are predicting the lights may be visible over the northern half of the country and even as far south as alabama and here in northern california, it's been almost 20 years since last severe geomagnetic storm happened and this could cause some communication disruptions. the increased radiation from the storm what increases the chances of seeing the northern lights. >> now to our 4 zone forecast. we're taking a look outside at sfo this evening. i don't see any lights just >> northern lights warrants but got a chance. we got a chance to see. yeah, we do have a chance that we could actually see a member not too

long ago. we have the event and some people actually have some shots actually here in the bay area. of course, everything's got to go, right. but on a scale of 5, this is a category for severe storm that's now developing in space. and so a possibility. yeah, there's a possibility. likelihood northern parts of the u.s. all the way through canada. they're going to see that, in fact, you're probably see a lot of stuff posted online as we head toward tomorrow. the possibility, though, it's hard to forecast these a space storms. they could see all the way down into denver all the way down a further south and maybe even northern california. there's about a 4% chance. you can see the places like reading. you never know. we could possibly see it in the bay area that just comes in our direction. but outside right now, we are looking at some patchy fog moving in along the coastline out of sfo. still some delays there. and that's work they're doing on the runways. there are no delays being reported at oakland or san jose. you're going forecast in the monterey bay kind of cool. as you can see some patchy fog early on that some sunshine and 60's and a couple of 70's, even 80 degrees in carmel valley

southern california, about 60 degrees in san diego, 70 in downtown los angeles about 61 degrees in santa barbara. if you plan to head the high country, beautiful weather member last weekend, we're talking about 2 feet of snow in the sierra. now we've got 70 degrees warm in truckee. 67 degrees in southlake and about 80 degrees. reynoso second round for the weekend. should be a nice weekend for moms up there. if you're headed in that direction, we're going to see lots of sunshine and really comfortable temperatures near 70 degrees through the weekend. all right. out the door right now, we do have some patchy fog that has crept in toward the golden gate bridge, starting to see some cooling along the coastline that your firsthand the temperatures dropping down even in oakland today as much as 6 degrees cooler today. well, these numbers are something else. we have hot 90's in concord and saint rose, 88 degrees and live more san jose. checking 86 81 in oakland, 70 degrees in san francisco. so numbers begin to cool down around the bay area about. i think it's going to be a slow cooling trend just takes a long time for that cool marine air to work its

way well inland with such strong ridge of high pressure overhead. so 60's around much temperatures going to be cool there tomorrow about 58 daly city, about 63 and half moon bay inside the bay. you'll find a variety of temperatures. you had southward. you can find some very warm weather. in fact, on the hot side, maybe 91 in campbell by tomorrow afternoon about 88 pleasanton. 88 in little more about 87 degrees in walnut creek. we'll see those temperatures staying hot well inland tomorrow, but as you approach the coastline, you get that sea breeze and that cools those temperatures down. well, as we look toward the holiday weekend, of course, we're thinking about moms. we get into sunday for mother's day. temperatures are going to be cooler. much more reasonable cooling down through about monday. the warming up a little bit on tuesday and wednesday. then cooling right back down somewhat. but all these temperatures staying just a little bit above average, especially inland. if you like the cool weather, you head out to the coast. take your mom there. she is going to love so look to the north around midnight tonight. yes, that's the chance you want to see the aurora tonight. yeah. look to the north. find a nice clear spot. get away from and the lights and yeah, you may get lucky. this could be that night. nice to have a clear

one right in front. okay. >> a group of women put on hard hats and started building some new homes in the east bay today it was the annual women's leadership build habitat for humanity, focuses on women serving their community by building or repairing homes. each year today, volunteers worked on in affordable housing community in walnut creek named esperanza place. we spoke to one of the new homeowners who put in more than 200 hours building her new hope. it's nothing like being able to be part of building your home with so much love. i don't know many people that are able to see. >> say i built this house from the from the ground. >> phase one of the projects already done today, the volunteers started making the walls for phase 2. 23 families will be moving in next month when all the houses are finished in this community, there will be 42 homes in total happening right now. parts of highway 37 between vallejo and sonoma county are shut down once again for repaving.
